If you frequently rate foods based upon their ability to be a vehicle for avocado, then we are kindred spirits. Also, this chicken Avocado Burger with Chipotle Yogurt Sauce recipe is going to be your new favorite thing to throw on the grill!

I really should have though of this recipe sooner.

Avocado on a burger has been the standard around here for a while (hi, Green Chile Chicken Burgers, Sweet Potato Turkey Burger, and Super Food Black Bean Vegan Burger). Why it took me so long to put the avocado in a burger I do not know.

Naturally, you should probably top your Avocado Burger with avocado slices. Avocado IN the burger and ON the burger.

When you are a food-as-vehicle-for-avocado person, this double avocado situation is not overkill in the slightest.

Chicken Avocado Burger with Chipotle Yogurt Sauce. Easy with SO MUCH FLAVOR. Big chunks of avocado mixed with chicken or turkey, cilantro and chipotle peppers. Healthy and delicious! Recipe at wellplated.com | @wellplated

After I had my “avocado IN the burger!” mini-epiphany, I remembered a small detail that brought me back to earth. Avocado Tuna Cakes. As their name suggests, they are patties with avocado mixed inside. They were the standard lunch menu in our house for all of January and February. I had simply forgotten about them.

Does that make today’s Avocado Burger the equivalent of an unexpected $5 bill you discover in your jeans pocket? It’s something you’ve had all along, but the surprise feels fresh and new again.

About These Avocado Burgers

In today’s version of avocado burgers, I used ground chicken along with two Tex-Mex flavor besties, cilantro and chipotle peppers in adobo. If you’ve never purchased this magical can of flavor, you are in for a treat. They are inexpensive, available in the Hispanic section of nearly every grocery store, and are the secret to this Avocado Burger recipe’s deep, smoky flavor.

Both the chipotle peppers themselves and the adobo sauce in which they are packed offer big-time flavor, so we’ll be using both in the avocado burger patties.

To top the burgers, I mixed a little of the extra adobo sauce with Greek yogurt to create a super fast, super yummy chipotle yogurt sauce. The recipe as written is fairly mild, so feel free to add an extra teaspoon or two if you are feeling daring and want to up the heat.

Chicken or Turkey Avocado Burgers. Easy, healthy, and SO flavorful! Top these chicken burgers with guacamole, salsa, cheese, or any of your favorite Tex-Mex toppings for an easy, healthy, 30 minute meal. Recipe at wellplated.com | @wellplated

If you want to take this chipotle/avocado business to the next level, you could serve these Avocado Burgers alongside chipotle-spiced Grilled Sweet Potato Fries with Avocado Hummus, then wash them down with a Skinny Margarita shaken with a dash of the extra adobo sauce. My kind of meal!

You can also swap the ground chicken for ground turkey to make a turkey avocado burger instead (like these classic Turkey Burgers). No changes to the recipe needed—both are delicious.

Along with the chipotle yogurt sauce, we topped our burgers with prepared salsa…and extra avocado. But I don’t think I needed to tell you that.

Total: 25 minutes

Servings: 4 burgers

Ingredients

FOR THE BURGERS:

  • 1 teaspoon adobo sauce from the can of chipotle peppers
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped fresh cilantro
  • 1 large ripe avocado peeled, pitted, and cut into 1/4-inch chunks

FOR SERVING:

  • Optional: lettuce or spinach, thinly sliced red onion, tomato, prepared salsa, nonfat plain Greek yogurt (or sour cream)

Instructions

  • Preheat an outdoor grill or indoor grill pan to medium (about 375 degrees F).
  • In a large bowl, gently combine the chicken, garlic, breadcrumbs, diced chipotle pepper, adobo sauce, salt, pepper, and cilantro until evenly combined. Carefully fold in the avocado. Shape into 4 patties.
  • Oil the grill, then cook burgers on each side for about 5 minutes, until cooked through and the internal temperature reaches 165 degrees F.
  • While the burgers cook, prepare the chipotle yogurt sauce: In a small bowl, stir together the Greek yogurt, adobo sauce, and salt. Taste and adjust seasoning as desired. Serve on top of the burgers, with additional toppings as desired.

Notes

  • *DO NOT use the whole can of adobo peppers—just one single pepper (or feel free to add two if you want more of a kick), along with the sauce in the specified amount. This ingredient can be found in the Hispanic section of most grocery stores.

  1. Oh, how I wish my husband liked avocados…  These sound delicious.  I would use chipotle powder in place of the chiles in adobo – both in the burgers and the sauce.  I’m thinking ½ teaspoon of powder in the burgers and ¼ tsp. in the sauce (can always use more if desired).  I just don’t like adobo sauce, it does not taste pleasant to me.

  2. As an avid-avocado lover, I actually feel shameful that I have never thought of this idea either!  I always use them as a topper, but this is better cuz then they won’t fall off when I try to eat my burger!  You’re genius :)

  3. Pure genius. Why put avocado ON a burger when you can put it IN the burger!? Cannot wait to try this delicousness!

  4. You had me at avocado :) these were delicious!! We grilled them over the weekend, and everyone loved the chipotle yogurt sauce. I feel you could use the leftover sauce on other burgers or as a dipping sauce for sweet potato fries too!5 stars

    1. Sabrina, I’m so glad to hear you enjoyed them! Thanks so much for taking the time to leave this awesome review!

  5. I made these once last summer and again yesterday. I forgot how delicious these burgers are. Will be keeping these in my summer rotation!5 stars

  6. Hello!

Will this be flavorful without the adobo in the burger? I want to make these for my toddler! Thanks!

    1. Elizabeth, I think that would be fine! It won’t have as much flavor, but if you need something mild, that’s a good option.

  7. These were incredible! Full of flavor, and the avocado in the burger makes for an amazing texture.5 stars

  8. I just made these and they are amazing! A great mix of flavours and spices. I had a can of chipotles in adobo sauce in the cupboard and had no idea what to do with them. I do now!
    Thank you!5 stars
