Although I’m not usually one for “cute” foods and am fairly miserable at arts and crafts, I make an exception for holidays like Halloween. Today’s healthy Halloween Banana Popsicles—ghost-shaped frozen banana popsicles and mummy-shaped peanut butter banana popsicles—are a fun, easy treat to make with kids. As I can attest, they are also quite popular with adults too.

Although I was happy to leave many aspects of grade school behind (Presidential Fitness Test, I am looking at you), I do truly miss the anticipation and activities leading up to holidays like Halloween.

Between the orange and black bulletin boards, ghost-oriented math problems, and repeated announcements about costumes that were NOT appropriate to wear at school, by the time Halloween arrived, I was ready.

Now, it feels like holidays sneak up on me. Worse yet, the preparation for holidays, once a reason for joy, become a source of stress.

About These Delicious Halloween Treats

These silly ghost and mummy banana popsicles want you to take a break and remember the fun of Halloween.

You can connect with your inner kid AND feel like a responsible adult who’s choosing to make healthy Halloween snacks, instead of (or at least as a supplement to) busting out the candy bowl.

If these Halloween banana popsicles feel too complicated, FEAR NOT.

I am quite possibly the least crafty person that I know, and I still managed to make identifiable ghosts and mummies. The only difficult step in these banana popsicles being patient while they freeze!

Boo-Nanas. CUTE! Easy yogurt dipped banana popsicles with chocolate chips and peanut butter. Perfect kids and healthy Halloween snacks! @wellplated

Since I was going for a healthy Halloween snack option, instead of dipping the banana popsicles in white chocolate, I used lightly sweetened vanilla Greek yogurt.

It worked beautifully, and the banana popsicles, while healthy enough to pass for a snack, were still sweet enough to serve as a light dessert.

Now that I have the healthy Halloween snacks under control (urgent issue #1, resolved), I can turn my attention from the banana popsicles to urgent issue #2: WHAT should my costume be?

Any suggestions welcome!

Easy yogurt-dipped banana popsicles in the shape of mummies and ghosts. Fun to make with kids and the perfect healthy Halloween snacks for school or home.

Prep: 15 minutes
Total: 2 hours

Servings: 14 —8 ghosts and 6 mummies

Ingredients

For the Banana Popsicles

  • 4 large fresh bananas not overly ripe, or the bananas may be too soft
  • 1 cup nonfat Greek vanilla yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar
  • Mini semi-sweet chocolate chips for eyes
  • 16 popsicle sticks

For the Banana Popsicle Mummies

  • 1/3 cup creamy natural peanut butter

Instructions

  • For the Banana Popsicle Ghosts: Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or a silpat mat. Peel 2 bananas and slice each in half, cross-wise. Slice each half in half again the “long” way, so that you have 4 long, narrow pieces total. Carefully insert a popsicle stick into the bottom of each, then place on the baking sheet.
  • For the Banana Popsicle Mummies: Cut the pointy tips off of the 2 remaining bananas, then slice the bananas crosswise into 3 equal round “logs.” Insert a popsicle stick into one end of each, then place on the baking sheet. Freeze all banana pops for at least 30 minutes or overnight.
  • In a small bowl, mix together the yogurt and powdered sugar. Once the bananas are frozen, dip them into the yogurt mixture, then return them to the lined baking sheet. Place 2 mini chocolate chips on each of the ghosts for eyes. Do not place the eyes on the mummies yet. Return to the freezer for at least 1 hour to allow the yogurt to set.
  • For the mummies, place the peanut butter in a small, microwave-safe bowl, then heat until smooth and creamy, about 30-45 seconds, stirring as needed. With a small spoon, drizzle on top of the banana mummies to make “bandages.” Place mini chocolate chips for eyes. Return to the freezer until the peanut butter is firm, about 30 additional minutes. When ready to serve, let the banana popsicles soften at room temperature for a few minutes. Enjoy immediately, or place in a ziptop bag and freeze for up to 2 months.

Notes

  • Freeze leftover banana popsicles in a ziptop bag for up to 2 months.

  1. Hi Erin – These are so cute! the recipe says Greek yogurt, but the directions in step 3 says frozen yogurt. My guess is it should be the Greek yogurt and not frozen?5 stars

    1. Thanks for pointing this out, Kathryn! It should be the vanilla Greek yogurt. I hope you enjoy the recipe if you try it!

  2. Thank you for this wonderful recipe, Erin. I made the ‘ghosts’ with my 3 year old grandson today. They were perfect for him to help with as they were so simple to make. We both loved them and it was an added bonus that they were a healthy treat. I think these will be a new Hallowe’en tradition at Nan’s house!5 stars

  3. These are awesome. I just attempted my first batch and the yogurt coated the bananas and then spread all over the tray as I was making the others. Tips or thoughts on how to dip them?

    1. Hi Kate, I haven’t really had this problem but a few tips that might help. Make sure the bananas are completely frozen and make sure the yogurt is cold. Also you might have to work in batches and use a cold tray as well. Hope this helps!
