Hi Laura! It can be any brand of curry powder. I got my last bottle at Trader Joe’s. Garam masala is not the same as curry powder, they have different flavor profiles. Hope that helps!
I had some veggies I needed to use before going on a trip (carrots, celery, green and yellow squash, and red pepper) and sautéed them with the onion, garlic, and ginger. I added more spices than recommended because I had more in my pot. It turned out great! Eating it tonight and freezing the rest for later! Great recipe and super easy! Without the extra veggies, a quick and delicious meal!
Hello! I’m not too familiar with purchasing Lentils, would I be purchasing the bagged and dried lentils for this recipe? Or do they come in a canned option?
WOW! This was DELICIOUS. Made it tonight for dinner. We did add chicken breast (our only modification). This is a keeper for sure. Super simple to make but packed with great flavor. Someone was asking about the Curry Powder. We used the Simple Truth brand Curry Powder (not garam masala) which you can find at any Kroger, King Soopers, City Market, Harris Teeter.
This was absolutely delicious and easy to make! I didn’t have shallots, so I substituted finely chopped white onion. Also, I didn’t have tumeric, so I left it out and just used 1 Tbsp Garam Masala seasoning + 1 tsp Curry powder instead. So yummy. :)
Absolutely loved this! If you’re suegra free, you can just leave out the little bit of added sugar. This tasted so authentic & it’s super easy in the instant pot. Took about 5 min to prepare! Will definitely be making this again and again :)
I enjoy the flavor profile of this recipe, but unfortunately no matter how carefully I stir and/or deglaze the inner pot, I consistently get the burn error long before the pot reaches pressure. I end up cooking it just on the low or normal saute setting instead. It works, but it’s not as convenient.
Hi Misty! I’m so sorry to hear that you got the burn notice. It seems some pressure cooker models tend to do this versus others. I’ve made it successfully (as have other readers) without any problem. I’m glad you were still able to enjoy the flavor!
Love the recipe! Have made it many time and we serve it with fresh fruits and cucumbers on the side. *** Be careful if using the 2X or 3x option as the water called out in the first paragraph does not scale up. It stays at 1 cup. ***
This is fantastic. My new staple. Great spice and super easy to make. No rice needed, in my opinion. I topped mine with a dollop of Greek yogurt mixed with cilantro, curry, lemon juice, ginger powder….so delish. Even my meat eating other half loved it. He added chicken 😁.
The flavour!!! Yummmm!!! Made pretty much exactly but also added celery and carrot, and then used fresh turmeric instead of ground. What a fabulous meal, made so quickly! Im glad I doubled the recipe :) Thank you!
The taste of this was ultimately good, but I got SIX burn notifications before it was cooked. In fact, the whole things cooked just in the time it took to come to pressure the SIX times because I never got it to come up to pressure without getting a burn notification. I stirred and deglazed it several times and tried again–to no avail. I emptied it out completely and washed the pot completely clean–and still a burn notice before it reached pressure. Again, it was tasty, but definitely not worth the aggravation of dealing with the burn notifications. (I have been using the instant pot for several years and have never had this issue arise before, so I am sure it is the recipe and not something I did wrong.)
Hi Vicki! I definitely do not think you did anything wrong. And I definitely do not think it is the recipe. About 5% of the commenters below got the burn notice. I really think it has to do with the make and the model of the pressure cooker you are using. Mine has never once given me a burn notice on any of my recipes and there are some people who always get the burn notice. I’m so sorry that it happened but I am you were still able to enjoy it.
Hi Erin
Thanks for the recipe. It looks good. I want to try it but confused about the lentils to water ratio. Usually one cup of dry lentils requires 2-3 cups of water to cook in. Your recipe only calls for one cup of water to 1 and half cups of lentils. I am a bit confused.
Hi Noelle! I’ve tested this recipe multiple times before brining it to the website and the amounts are correct. Don’t forget some of the liquid is also coming from the coconut milk. Hope you enjoy it!
I’ve made this many times and it’s a staple in my house! Absolutely delicious. I also add a lot of veggies to it like cauliflower, carrots, etc which turn out really creamy.
Hi there – I was hoping to add some cauliflower and a chopped russet potato to the mix. Do you think I need to adjust the amount of spice or liquid for the instant chocolate pot? Thank you!
Hi Meredith! I’ve only tested the recipe as written, so I wouldn’t be able to advise on adjusting amounts of liquid or spice. If you decide to experiment, let me know h ow it goes!
Okay so I’m the worst cook in my family, nothing about cooking & especially baking makes sense to me lol, but as someone who eats primarily plant-based it’s been challenging to add variety in my diet just by the simple fact that I suck at cooking. With that being said this lentil instant pot recipe made cooking so much easier, its super simple & gave me plenty of leftovers to munch on!!
To anyone who has trouble in the kitchen or anyone who wants to try a new recipe, I highly recommend this one!! Erin made this recipe super easy to follow, I was scanning Google for various lentil recipes but when I came across this one by Well Plated, my search was over!!
Thank you so much for taking the time to put together this recipe for your readers & fellow chefs (new or experienced), this recipe was delicious 10/10!!
When you say curry powder… do u just mean keens curry powder? Or could I use garam masala?

Hi Steph! Thank you so much! That made my day!
Silly question, are you using dry lentils?
Hi Shannon! yes, just straight out of the bag. Step 1 will tell you how to prep them! Hope you enjoy it!
