• Thank you so much Erin for your delicious oatmeal recipe. It was absolutely perfect and exactly how I like it. Thank you for sending it. I went online to see how to make it and they said 1 cup of steel cut oats to three quarters of a cup of water. Well that didn’t work as I knew it wouldn’t and had to keep adding more water so that it didn’t burn. Was also pleased to know that it can be frozen. So thank you again as yours was perfect.

    Jenny.

  • Having been making a change in diet, oatmeal is one recommended item and I have always liked oatmeal–until last week, when I was very dissatisfied with the finished product. I knew I had a box of steel cut in the cabinet, so I tried that this morning and did enjoy them. Much more satisfying. Then I went to the internet to get ideas. I think I will be satisfied with this breakfast, for a while anyway. I’ll use the old-fashioned oats in my smoothie or in baking (grind up for flour).

  • This recipe is fantastic! Thank you so much. I adore steel cut oatmeal but I had never made it myself. I wasn’t sure what ratio of water and milk I would need per serving of oats. This worked out great. I let mine summer for 30 minutes total because I like it extra creamy. I added some vanilla, cinnamon and brown sugar. Yum!5 stars

  • This has become my go-to recipe for steel cut oats because most of the liquid gets absorbed and turned into a nice, toothsome porridge that’s perfect on a snowy morning. Simply following the instructions on the paper can of oats leads to excess water that needs to be drained off.

I like to make my oats savory- I use chicken stock instead of plain water, and mix in diced chicken and a little frozen spinach at the end. Then I portion them evenly into 4-5 little containers, and that’s breakfast sorted for the workweek.5 stars

  • Could you provide the measurements units in metric please? I’m really confused by 1 cup of oats that would weigh ard 80g, but a 1 cup of liquid would weigh ard 240g(240ml). Following the recipe, that is quite a bit of liquid (ard 900ml) for 80g of oats. Thank you!

  • This gave me the confidence to cook steel-cut oats for the first time. Loved them! I added raisins and pecans.5 stars

  • The suggested addition of the protein powder, is that measurement for the entire recipe or an individual serving?5 stars

  • Steel cut oats are the it’s the whole grain it’s chewy it’s satisfying. I like to make mine like an oatmeal raisin cookie.
Brown raisins golden raisins walnuts vanilla cinnamon sugar and if you like you can add brown sugar maple syrup. Whatever you like.
But this is so good it’s like eating a cookie.
And whatever you like or add nothing.5 stars

  • Why do these recipes never say whether to simmer covered or uncovered? You provide so much information, but not this most basic fact. It’s just one more word.

    1. Hi Adam! Thanks for the feedback, if any of our recipes needs the extra step to cover the pot, it will be written in the in instructions. Hope this helps!

  • Can you make steel cut oats in the microwave? Can you bake them?
I do this with old fashioned rolled oats.
I also bake old fashioned oats and do overnight oats using your recipes. Thank you for your recipes

    1. Hi Eve, I really have never tried either method, so it would be hard for me to say. Let me know if you experiment with it!

    1. Hi Terry, I’ve not tested this out in a rice cooked, so I am not sure how it would work. If you decide to experiment, I’d love to know how it goes!

  • Thank you for answering ALL of my questions about steel cut oats before we got to the recipe. I came here for help – I’m leaving with steamy creamy steel cut oats (making them now with some vanilla, brown sugar and walnuts). Today, I learned the difference between the oats. Thank you!5 stars

  • Growing up, my dad would give us warm oatmeal with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top! As an adult, I like to put cinnamon and blueberries in my steel cut oats, then top it with the ice cream. It’s a great dessert/ brunch item.

  • I’ve been cooking steel cut oats for my husband & me For several years using, btw, the same method as you. I ran into a “power bowl” recipe online adding ground flax seed, nuts, cinnamon, salt. We added butter, milk fresh berries at the table.
I just bought a new box (Quaker) with new proportions of oats & water and 5 minute cooking. Since we like a little “tooth” to our oatmeal, I rechecked the label . They’re steel cut, but labeled quick. So don’t be fooled like I was- read the whole label. They were okay & the sliced almonds gave it some of that “tooth” we like.
