For topping: Whipped cream, marshmallows, caramel, or hot fudge
Instructions
In a small saucepan, heat the milk over medium high heat until steaming and small bubbles form around the edge (do not let the milk boil!).
Add the chocolate chips, stirring occasionally with a whisk until smooth and melted. Then add any desired mix-ins or additional flavors.
Serve hot with desired toppings.
Notes
*MILK OPTIONS: I usually use skim milk, but 2% or whole will give the hot chocolate more body and richness. Dairy-free options such as almond milk, soy milk, or oat milk can be used well.
**CHOOSING CHOCOLATE: For the best-tasting homemade hot cocoa using chocolate chips or chopped chocolate, I like to use a 65% or greater dark chocolate.
TO STORE: Let cool to room temperature then store in a covered container for up to 1 day in the fridge.
TO REHEAT: Warm in a microwave-safe mug in the microwave or in a saucepan on the stovetop until steaming.
