I take my hot chocolate seriously, and I know you’re going to love this one!

I’ve adored hot chocolate since I was little and Santa filled my stocking with instant packs I’d mix up before bed.

As a teenager, I experienced French Hot Chocolate on my first trip to Paris. It’s sooooo decadent—like drinking a candy bar!

As a busy, health-minded adult, I’ve also come to appreciate lighter versions like this Healthy Hot Chocolate, but let’s be real—it’s not the same.

I’ve tried other protein hot chocolate recipes (most notably one that called for bone broth), and they were not it for me. They were watery, and I could still taste the broth, which in case you are wondering does not pair with chocolate. At ALL.

Thus, you must believe me when I say this protein hot chocolate recipe is absolutely legit. It’s velvety and thick like French hot chocolate, and thanks to the simple ingredient list and serious protein count, it fits in with my daily nutrition goals too!

ingredients for making high protein hot chocolate

Key Ingredients

You’ll find the full list of ingredients in the recipe card below, but here are some notes to keep in mind.

  • Milk. Any kind you like. I used 2% and opted for regular dairy milk for its high protein count compared to other alternatives.
  • Protein Powder. Use a scoop of your favorite brand of chocolate. I love this one.
  • Cocoa Powder. To up the chocolate faster.
  • Chopped Dark Chocolate. Melting 1 tablespoon into the hot cocoa gives it richness so it tastes like the real deal.
  • Pure Maple Syrup. To offset the bitterness of the cocoa powder. Add more or less to taste.

How to Make Protein Hot Chocolate

Warm. Whisk together the milk, protein powder, cocoa powder, maple syrup, and salt in a pan set over medium-high heat. Don’t let the milk come to a boil, but do heat it until it’s warm and steaming.

Melt in the Chocolate. Whisk in the chopped chocolate and vanilla until the chocolate melts and is incorporated into the liquid.

Finish. Sweeten to taste, pour into a mug, and top with all your faves! (Marshmallows for me!) ENJOY!

  1. WOW I am hooked and have been making this daily. Some tips: be careful not to overheat it or the protein powder can “cook” a little bit. It’s good with a tiny bit of peppermint extract5 stars
