I have an inner desire to be a Southern belle. This calling has come up a few times here, always when I’m sharing a recipe that reminds me of the South and my college girlfriends from the region. Today’s Greek Yogurt Chicken Salad is one of those recipes.

Skinny Greek Yogurt Chicken Salad with Grapes, Celery, and Fresh Dill. Creamy, cool, and crunchy! A quick, easy, healthy recipe that’s perfect for sandwiches and salads. Omit honey for the 21 Day Fix diet - Recipe at wellplated.com | @wellplated

I never tire of eating this healthy chicken salad for lunch.

It’s nutritious, creamy, ultra filling, and perfect for salads and sandwiches.

It also would likely horrify my friend from Alabama.

This Greek Yogurt Chicken Salad does not have mayo (just like this Avocado Egg Salad and Crab Salad). I can hear my sweet Alabama gal pal, who is an aficionado of all things chicken salad, gasping in horror.

Actually, she’s far too genteel for such a gesture.

I’m sure she has a very polite, socially appropriate sound effect for a chicken salad recipe made without mayo, which she considers an essential condiment for creamy salads of all kinds.

Although I pride myself on not being a picky eater, mayo is one food I’ve never enjoyed.

When I was little, my mom couldn’t even spread it on my sister’s sandwich then use the same knife to cut mine in half without my detecting the perpetration.

Fortunately, Greek yogurt has given me the opportunity to enjoy recipes that traditionally call for mayo, such as chicken salad, in a delicious and even healthy way.

  • Greek yogurt is creamy and thick like mayo but with a rich, tangy flavor I find that mayo lacks.
  • In most recipes, chicken salad included, Greek yogurt behaves exactly like mayo, making it a perfect one-to-one substitute.

As an added bonus, Greek yogurt is also incredibly healthy.

We’re talking high protein, calcium, and vitamins, all with little or no fat. Clearly I am a fan.

And I am also a major fan of Greek Yogurt Chicken Salad.

Chicken salad is one of those recipes that I sometimes forget about, then once I make it again, wonder why I don’t add it to my menu every single week.

It’s easy, healthy, and ripe for adaptation.

I’ve experimented with many different healthy chicken salad flavor profiles (Curry Chicken Salad; Greek yogurt chicken salad with mustard; Greek yogurt chicken salad without fruit and with fruit), and I can conclusively say that, while each has its place, today’s chicken salad with Greek yogurt and dill, along with some other tasty mix-ins, is my absolute favorite.

Make Ahead Tips

This salad tastes even better a few hours after it is made, so it’s perfect for parties.

  • You can make a big bowl in the morning, then set it out at lunch, along with bread or croissants for guests to serve themselves sandwiches, which Ben’s family does often on long summer days at the lake.
  • I also love prepping a bowl of chicken salad for myself to eat for lunch throughout the week. I keep it in the fridge and enjoy either on top of salad greens or piled high on a slice of toasted multigrain bread for fast, healthy lunches.

  1. Oh my goodness! I’m filing this one away to make soon as this is right up my alley. I’m a no mayo gal myself and I’m from the south. I’ve used sour cream and ranch dressing over the years as a substitute, but love the Greek yogurt idea to make it healthy. I’d cringe too if my sandwich was cut with mayo on the knife! Non-mayo people unite! ?

      1. Hi Linda! Most store brands don’t have mayo but they do include eggs. Luckily for this recipe no eggs are involved! Enjoy!

  2. This looks wonderful…yum! I laughed at your mayo references as I totally share your aversion. When my sister and I were kids we always prayed it would not be our turn to clear the dinner table if mayo had been served. We could not even bear to put the lid on the jar and take it to the fridge! :)

  3. I’m not a fan of mayo either. I use greek yogurt in tuna salad: it’s delish & so much healthier. Love this recipe, I need to buy grapes so I can try this.

  4. Ugh mayo has grossed me out for the longest time,  the top reason why I never ate chicken or egg salad!  Thankfully greek yogurt is something I can deal with, making it possible to enjoy this creamy filling salad!

  5. I love chicken salad but never had it with dill (which I love). I usually add tarragon to it. Love all the textures in this! Pinned!

    1. Tarragon sounds delicious too, Maria! I’d love to know what you think if you give it a try with dill.

  6. I do like mayo but I also like yogurt and think the tang would be really good in here! And you’ve got sweet and crunchy, which is a must for any chicken salad in my opinion. I’ve used grapes, cantaloupe, apples and even pineapple.

  7. Your mayo blip made me laugh!  I used to eat globs of it on my sandwiches as a kid, but don’t use it much as an adult.  I have to say though, if you’re willing to give another brand a shot, Sir Kensington’s mayo made with avocado oil is delicious.  I haven’t had mayo in my fridge for years, but got a sample of this stuff and now have a full jar.  It’s so good!  However, I will be making this chicken salad this weekend with yogurt.  I’ll save the mayo for my burger!

    1. Marci, it sounds like you had the exact opposite childhood mayo experience, haha. ;) Thanks for the tip about Sir Kensington. And I hope you enjoy this version of chicken salad!

  8. This looks amazing! Would it be possible to substitute dried dill for the fresh in this recipe? I always have that on hand. Thanks!

    1. Thanks so much, Kristen! The general rule of thumb is to use 1/3 the amount called for when using dried herbs instead of fresh. That said, if you have the option to use fresh, I definitely recommend it because the flavor is more pleasant, but dried will certainly work in a pinch!

    1. YAY Bridget! I’m excited to hear that you enjoyed it! Thanks so much for taking the time to report back. :)

  9. This recipe is delicious. I’m not a big fan of dill so I left it out and it is still so very tasty. Thanks for sharing recipe.5 stars

  10. Any tips for making this if I don’t have milk on hand today? Can I dilute with water, or plain kefir?

  11. This recipe is SO delicious! The only thing I changed was adding a teaspoon dijon mustard and 2 teaspoons lemon juice. I would recommend this recipe to anyone looking for a tasty and healthy meal!4 stars

    1. Stephanie, thank you so much for giving this recipe a try and reporting back with your tweaks! I’m so glad to hear you enjoyed it.

    1. I’m so glad you enjoyed this recipe, Danny! Thanks so much for taking the time to leave this great review.

    1. I’m so happy to hear you love the recipe, Tracy! Thank YOU for taking the time to leave this awesome review!

  12. Oh YUM! I’ve been on the lookout for something new for lunch, that’s healthy. I get so tired of the same thing over and over again. This recipe is it! I can’t wait! Thanks for sharing it. I just love the different textures you have going on in this chicken salad.

    1. Hi Nancy, I haven’t tried it myself, but the milk is a small amount and used to thin out the dressing, so subbing almond milk should work. I hope you enjoy!

  13. The minute I saw this recipe I HAD TO make it! So delicious. I did not include the nuts and only had dry dill on hand and it was fantastic. It also (for anyone who cares) is a great great recipe for the new Weight Watchers plan. Kudos for such a simple and amazing dish!5 stars

  14. Ok, honest rate here. I don’t do  Greek yogurt and have never tried grapes in my chicken salad. Just a boring country girl I guess lol, BUT I love chicken salad and was looking for something good and healthy other than using mayo. This is it!! It is delicious. I made it exactly as the recipe calls. Thank you for a great recipe.5 stars

    1. WOOHOO Jackie, I’m glad to hear this recipe was a hit! Thanks for giving it a try and for taking the time to report back and share your honest feedback!

  15. Great recipe, I added 2 tablespoons of low fat mayo anyways cuz I had it on hand and it was delicious. Thank you for the great recipe! Also, avocado is usually something used to substitute mayo if you want to give it a try in your chicken salad! I tried it with another chicken salad recipe and it was great5 stars

    1. Angela, I’m so glad you enjoyed the chicken salad! Thanks so much for taking the time to share your tweaks and review!

  16. Oh my goodness! I just made this for my work lunches this week. Sooooo delicious. I omitted the honey and almonds (slight almond allergy), and added a little lemon juice. It’s so yummy. I had to shove it in the fridge before I sat down and ate the whole thing! 5 stars

    1. I am so happy to hear that Chrissy, thank you! And thank you for leaving this glowing review too. It means a lot!

  17. I made this for dinner tonight, and so much yum. I’m a huge fan of chicken salad anyways, but I’m always on the look out for healthier options, and omg this is probably my new favorite chicken salad recipe. I don’t have any particular aversion to mayo, but the greek yogurt, imo, is so much better then the mayo recipes out there. so big kudo’s, I’m adding this to my recipe rotation.5 stars

    1. Louise, THANK YOU! I am so happy to hear how much you enjoyed the recipe. Thanks for taking time to leave this wonderful review too!

  18. Made this and it was SO DELISH!!! Loved it so much I had to share I t with my sisters, since we are all trying to eat healthier. I wasn’t sure about the Greek yogurt but it gave the chicken salad the creaminess it needs. I loved all the textures, especially the toasted almonds! Definitely saving this recipe!5 stars

  19. As said it improves with time.
When I was young I used to make it with lightly whipped double cream – too many calories these days.

Maybe one day people will agree on what cooking units to use.
    How  much is a “cup”.
The US and the UK disagree about how many fluid ounces are in a pint, while most of the world has no idea what a fluid ounce is. 5 stars

  20. I wanted to make a chicken salad but had no mayo on hand and I usually mix the mayo with yogurt anyway, so i thought I would give this recipe a go using the recipe as a base with what i had on hand. Used an organic probiotic Bulgarian yogurt which was thinner than Greek yogurt so left out the milk. The honey with this tangy yogurt was perfect! Everything’s else in the dressing was the same. I Didn’t have grapes so I used a tart apple (peeled and diced), and I used an omega trail mix for the nuts and cranberries (it also had pumpkin seeds, walnuts, and mango bits) that I chopped up a bit, and dried dill that I mixed into the dressing. It was fantastic and I wish I had made more dressing to serve on the side since I served the chicken salad with crackers and mixed greens and would have poured some dressing on the greens. 5 stars

    1. Christine, I’m so glad you enjoyed this recipe as a great base and your tweaks sound so yummy too. Thank you for sharing!

  21. So good!!! I don’t ask my husbands opinion on food anymore because he critiques EVERYTHING. When my husband said to put this in the rotation the first time I made it I was surprised because it usually takes me a couple times to dial in a recipe before I get the final nod. This has been a hit every time I make it. I especially like how I can use Greek yogurt without it being noticeable (must be the honey). The grapes make it fresh and add moisture. I use a de-boned rotisserie chicken and its a meal I don’t have to cook! Win-Win. Thanks!!5 stars

  22. I made this tonight! I didn’t have red grapes so I used green instead. I was worried that it wasn’t going to be good as I was making it but it turned out delicious!

    Great recipe!

  23. Delicious and so easy!  I subbed Splenda (1 packet) instead of honey and added diced jalapeños for a kick. Winner!!  (Lasted 2-3 days before getting too watery by the way. Now I pack the dressing separate from salad for my whole week meal prep.)5 stars

  24. Very disappointed with the extreme lack of flavor in this dish. ):

I made this as a part of my lunch meal prep this week, and I was so excited to has something so fresh to eat this spring! But unfortunately this meal simply just has no flavor at all…like at ALL. The grapes were my favorite part in it….. Wouldn’t recommend.2 stars

    1. Hi Terra, I’m sorry to hear the salad wasn’t to your taste! We enjoyed it, but I know it’s disappointing to try a new recipe and not love it.

  25. Loved this recipe it provided a great base that I was looking for and left room for customizations! I’m not a fan of celery so I substituted them for apples and added a little heat with some red pepper. Delicious! Thank you5 stars

  26. Refreshing and summery, this chicken salad is the best! My husband, who doesn’t normally like chicken salad and was a bit grossed out by the thought of using Greek yogurt, couldn’t stop eating it. We kept sneaking bites out of it like we do left-over cake. It was full of flavor, but perhaps that depends on the ingredients used? I brined and baked the chicken breasts (flavored with a bit of Mrs. Dash Garlic and Herb) so they were very tender and used the Fage 2% plain Greek yogurt because it has a clean taste. I used a little less green onion than the recipe called for. I finely chopped/crushed the fresh dill and added it to the sauce mixture instead of sprinkling it on later, added a tablespoon of avocado mayo, and used a thick, raw honey. This will be my go-to dish to take to potlucks.5 stars

    1. Melody, I’m so glad to hear this recipe is a hit for you! Thanks for taking the time to share such an in-depth review.

  27. Just made this. Tastes yummy! Although I have to admit to using half yogurt and half mayo for my “it must be REAL mayo ” husband. Like others have noted the addition of honey and dill were things I would not have thought of myself. This recipe will lend itself nicely to other variations and substitutions. Today I used pecans instead of almonds. I read where someone used apples (which I may pick up and add). Thanks for the recipe.5 stars

    1. Leonora, I’m so glad to hear you enjoyed this! Thanks for taking the time to share your tweaks too.

  28. This is a fabulous no-mayo chicken salad!  Poaching chicken was fast & easy. I used toasted walnuts instead of almonds, but loved the grapes, celery & green onions. The dill is strong & I may back off a little next time.  I thought I would taste more tang from the yogurt, but the sweet from the honey took over.  Looking at other reviews, think I will try some lemon juice. Still think there is a flavor missing, but haven’t nailed it down yet.
Thanks for a great recipe!5 stars

  29. I loved it!!! Did not add the honey or the low fat milk. It really is an outstanding recepy, full of flavor and very healthy. Thanks! ?5 stars

  30. Wow this is amazing! I do like mayo, but wanted a healthier chicken salad. This is the best chicken salad I have had. I can’t wait for my husband to get home to try it. Thanks for sharing your recipe! 5 stars

  31. I am just amazed. This is the first time I’ve ever rated/commented on a recipe. It was so freaking delicious that I HAD to rate this.

I can say that this is hands down the best chicken salad I’ve had. I served mine on a croissant and it was just pure bliss.

I followed the recipe almost exactly with the following differences:
*My chicken was so tender it ended up being shredded instead of cubed.
*I added extra dill and pepper
*I added a bit of chili paste for some bite/spiciness
*I omitted the celery because my husband hates it.

It was amazing! The only thing I MIGHT do differently next time is add a little less honey. It did not taste overly sweet, but I think I can go with less sugar and it will still taste incredible.

5/5 stars! Lightly sweet, good crunch from almonds, good chewiness with grapes, mostly healthy, good tangy flavors, yum yummmmmm5 stars

    1. This MADE my day! I’m so happy you enjoyed this recipe, Angela! Thank you for taking the time to share this kind review!

  32. This was amazing! I will make it again and again! skipped the in the dressing and it turned out fine. Tossed well and the yogurt was ample to coat the rest of the ingredients. Added toasted sesame seeds as well. Excellent!5 stars

  33. Looking for an alternative to the Greek yogurt chicken salad cups that Costco USED to stock :-( I’ve never tried freezing anything like this – what are your thoughts are on freezing this to stretch it out a few weeks?  Thanks!!

    1. Hi Heather! I have not tried to freeze this recipe, and I’m afraid that the texture will be different once thawed. If you want to experiment, I suggest stirring it very well, freezing it, and making sure to drain excess water off once it thaws. If you decide to try it, I’d love to hear how it goes!

  34. Made this twice in 2 weeks! So good & healthy. I skipped salt, did half the honey & no milk. Used dried dill bc that’s what I had – so yummy & keeps just fine in fridge for weekly lunches/dinners. 5 stars

    1. I’m so happy to hear that this recipe was a hit, Annie! Thank you for taking the time to share this kind review!

  35. I live in AL and cannot stand mayo?.  I can look at brain surgery before looking at the M word. Thank you for sharing your recipe.5 stars

    1. I’m so happy that you enjoyed the recipe, Nancy! Thank you for sharing this kind review!

  36. I am excited to try this next week as a healthy lunch alternative for work. Any replacement options for dill? I love sweet pickled cubes but figured that’s probably not the healthiest.

    Thanks ?

  37. Made this today! Left out onion and Added cran raisins and some mixed nuts i had already ( sunflower, pumpkin and almond slices) and tsp of ground mustard. It was good. If I Do it again, i will leave out the Honey!5 stars

  38. Can I substitute Almond greek yogurt and almond milk for the greek yogurt and nonfat milk? Has anyone else done this?

    1. Hi Deanna! I haven’t tried it myself, but I think it would work fine. If you decide to try it, I’d love to hear how it goes!

  39. So good really enjoyed this. I incorporated the dill into the dressing and added diced radishes into the mix also for a pepper hit. Will make again5 stars

  40. Amazing!! Only change, I would say there was way too much salt for me. I halved the salt and think I will do 1/4 tsp next time. Making it again tonight!5 stars

  41. This was so good and even the fussy eaters loved it. Everyone asked for the recipe. I made a double batch but when you hit the x2 button the measurements in the parentheses do not double so beware if you are doubling the recipe. I will make this again for sure. Thank you for sharing.5 stars

      1. Any suggestions for a replacement for the almonds? I have a nut allergy and still want that crunch in the salad. Looks so yummy!

        1. Hi Kim! Roasted pumpkin seeds (pepitas) or unsalted sunflower seeds would be a good nut free replacement. Might change the flavor a bit, but you would still get the crunch! Hope that helps!

  42. Love this recipe, super easy for meal prep lunches. Am I reading the nutrition facts incorrectly though? 228,000 calories for a serving can’t be right hopefully. 😅5 stars

    1. Hi Gina, the calories per serving is 228! Hope that helps! So glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for this kind review!

  43. I made this recipe exactly as listed and it was okay. It needed a lot more salt and the milk made it a bit runny, I think I would leave it out next time. Overall the flavors were food and I loved the addition of the fresh dill.4 stars

  44. I don’t like Mayo or miracle whip and have been longing for this recipe. I’ve also tried it with cashews.5 stars

  45. My NEW chicken salad GO-TO recipe! First, I love that this recipe doesn’t use mayo. I opted for fat-free greek yogurt, packed with some protein :) …I followed the recipe exactly, and then made a couple adjustments. I used a rotisserie chicken, and shredded it. I added a finely diced shallot. I also added some of my favorite hot sauce to give it a little zip–one of my local favorites, Double Take Signature Hot Sauce. I’ve eaten this salad with butter lettuce cups, sandwiches, and topped on Ritz crackers…yummy! Plus, it looks beautiful!5 stars

  46. I love mayo so when I found this recipe I was skeptical. I had my husband taste it and he didn’t even notice the switch to yogurt and asked if he could take it to lunch tomorrow. When I told him it was made with yogurt he didn’t believe me. A definite winner. Thanks.5 stars

  47. 10/10! One of my personal favorite meal prep recipes…and one of the most common recipes that I send to my clients for easy meal prep ideas!

We’ve been making this for years…every time I prep this for my family, I’m reminded of how easy yet flavorful it is. We love it with pressure cooker/slow cooker shredded chicken breast and have made it with apples instead of grapes and walnuts instead of almonds (depending on what we already have on-hand).

I usually plan to have it on bread/wraps or with veggies/crackers…but honestly, I often end up eating it plain – it’s THAT good!!5 stars

  48. I made this just as is and it was absolutely amazing. I’m trying to lose weight and get in shape and 228 calories for a cup and a whopping 27 g of protein! AND it tastes like a cheat meal. I’m in heaven! Thank you!!5 stars

  49. Hi Erin,
Love yogurt as a repacement for [the dreaded] mayo. I’m making this tonight & will use fennel instead of celery…..I love fennel too. Thanks for all your great recipes. Nancy Visconti

  50. I wanted to love this, I really did. But, to me, the Greek yogurt was absolutely gross in it, and I love PLAIN Greek yogurt. I couldn’t waste all those ingredients, so I kept eating it and even went into it fresh the next day. Alas, I just had to toss it.1 star

    1. I’m sorry this recipe wasn’t to your tastes, Merry. I (and many other readers) have truly enjoyed it, so I wish you would’ve too!

  51. I subbed blueberries for grapes, vegan mayo for yogurt, threw in some pecans with the almonds slivers and chopped baby spinach for color. (Also a dash of curry). Omgoodness it was delish. Of course one cd sub tuna for chicken.5 stars

  52. This recipe is easy and delicious! Comes together quickly and works with substitutions! I’ll definitely be making again!5 stars

  53. I made this for 4 people for dinner and served with soup. I used the Costco pre cooked and shredded chicken for flavor and simplicity. It was outstanding!5 stars

  54. Had some poached chicken breasts to use up, so tried this. Super-easy, with nicely-balanced flavors. I cut the chicken smaller: closer to 1/4″ dice. Had to use green grapes instead of red, and quartered them because they were large! Also discovered (shocker!) that the only Greek yogurt in the house is vanilla flavored. Oops! So (please don’t faint) I had to sub in low-fat mayo. But used less of it!! Thinking some aleppo pepper might be tasty in here. And/or so might some freshly-crushed coriander seed. And maybe increase the chicken and include some chopped red bell pepper, especially if subbing green grapes. Trader Joe’s Norwegian flatbreads are the perfect carrier. Dinner was tasty!5 stars

  55. Good. A lot less calories than with Mayonnaise. But to me there was too much pepper and I added some dried cranberries.4 stars

    1. Hi Linda! So glad you enjoyed the recipe. Thanks for the feedback! You can definitely adjust the seasonings to your liking!

  56. I made this but omitted the honey & milk and also the dill & green onions. I added a couple of chopped eggs. It was delicious. Will definitely make again.5 stars

  57. This is one of the best healthy chicken salads I’ve ever made. So quick too with leftover rotisserie chicken! This will be making its way into my lunch rotation!
    Thanks!5 stars

  58. I really liked this version of healthier chicken salad. The milk in the yogurt thins the dressing out nicely. To me, the honey took out the sharp tang of yogurt. I think the fresh dill really MADE the dressing. I will make this again and again. So wonderful to save some calories and fat from the mayo. Thanks for another wonderful recipe. BTW, I ordered yesterday your cookbook for my sister for her birthday!5 stars
