How to Make the Best Turkey Chili Recipe
The Ingredients
- Ground Turkey. Lean ground turkey is excellent for chili. It adds wonderful flavor to the chili and helps make it more satisfying. Turkey is low in calories and rich in protein, vitamins, and minerals.
- Garlic + Onion. Building blocks for a deeply flavorful chili.
- Vegetables. Bell peppers, sweet potatoes, carrots, and celery help make this chili incredibly nutritious and flavorful. The varying textures of these veggies also create a wonderful chili consistency.
- Tomato Sauce + Diced Tomatoes. The tomato sauce adds liquid, and both provide rich tomato flavor.
- Spices. We’re using chili powder, cumin, paprika, cayenne, salt, and pepper. This mix of spices is what gives chili its distinct flavor. They add warmth, earthiness, a touch of sweetness, and spice.
- Red Pepper Flakes. Just a pinch adds the right amount of heat.
The Directions
- Sauté the Vegetables. Cook until soft.
- Brown the Turkey. Stir frequently to break up any big chunks.
- Cook the Chili. Add the remaining ingredients, bring the mixture to a boil, then allow it to simmer for 45 minutes.

- Shredded Cheese. This one is a crowd-pleaser! Monterey Jack, pepper Jack, or cheddar cheese would be tasty.
- Greek Yogurt or Sour Cream. Add a dollop of Greek yogurt or sour cream for something cool and creamy.
- Cilantro. Looks beautiful on top and adds freshness.
- Tortilla Chips or Strips. Having something crunchy on top is delicious! (I especially love this topping for my Green Chili Recipe.)
- Green Onion. For freshness and crunch.
Storage Tips
- To Store. Turkey chili will keep in the refrigerator for about 4 days.
- To Reheat. Rewarm leftovers in a pot on the stovetop over medium-low heat or in the microwave. Add a splash of water or chicken broth to help loosen it if needed.
- To Freeze. Turkey chili can be frozen for up to 3 months. Let thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.
Meal Prep Tip
Chop all the vegetables up to 1 day in advance, storing them in separate airtight storage containers in the refrigerator.

Ingredients
For the Healthy Turkey Chili:
- 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
- 3 cloves garlic minced
- 2 medium onions diced
- 2 bell peppers any color, cored and chopped
- 2 large carrots peeled and diced
- 2 stalks celery diced
- 1 medium sweet potato peeled and cubed (optional—I added it!)
- 2 pounds ground turkey (I used 93% lean)
- 1 1/2-2 cups water more as needed
- 1 (15-ounce) can tomato sauce
- 1 (14.5-ounce) can diced tomatoes in their juices
- 3 tablespoons chili powder
- 1 tablespoon ground cumin
- 1 tablespoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
- Pinch red pepper flakes
Optional Turkey Chili Toppings:
- Sliced fresh avocado
- Thinly sliced jalapeño
- Shredded cheese
- Plain non-fat Greek yogurt or sour cream
- Freshly chopped cilantro
Instructions
- Heat the oil in a Dutch oven or large soup pot over medium heat. Add the garlic, onions, bell peppers, carrots, celery, and sweet potato. Sauté for 5 to 7 minutes, until soft.
- Add the turkey and cook until browned, 5 to 7 minutes, stirring often to break up the chunks.
- Once the meat is browned, add 1 1/2 cups water, tomato sauce, diced tomatoes in their juices, chili powder, cumin, paprika, cayenne, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a moderate bubble. Let cook, uncovered, until the chili thickens, about 45 minutes, stirring every so often so that the chili does not stick to the bottom. If the chili becomes too thick, add a little water to reach your desired consistency.
- Toward the end of the cooking time, taste and adjust the seasonings as desired. Add more cayenne pepper for an extra kick and more salt and pepper as needed. Serve hot with desired toppings.

- Lexi’s original version of the chili calls for slowly simmering it (in lieu of my “moderate bubble”) on the stove for 3 hours, adding more water as needed. Since I started cooking the chili later in the day (ahem, I was running late), I cooked it more quickly, which you will see reflected in the recipe directions.
- TO ADD BEANS: Add 1 (15-ounce) can black beans and/or 1 (15-ounce) can kidney beans.
- TO STORE: Refrigerate chili in an airtight storage container for up to 4 days.

I’m typically in camp “beans” (reference: Instant Pot Vegetarian Chili, and Crockpot White Chicken Chili), but for this particular turkey chili recipe, I decided to take a walk on the no-bean chili side and omit them. It’s plenty thick, rich, and filling on its own, and I felt that the no-bean route allowed the savoriness of the meat and the depth of the spices to shine. That said, if you are a firm believer that chili should have beans and want to toss in a can of pintos or red kidneys, your healthy turkey chili will still be fabulous.
I haven’t tested the recipe without meat, and I’m afraid it wouldn’t be as flavorful without it. However, my Vegetarian Chili and Instant Pot Vegetarian Chili are great options for those who want meat-free chili.
Yes! We love using ground turkey in our chili recipes, as it’s a great source of lean protein and still adds hearty flavor. If you prefer using ground beef in your chili, you can certainly swap it.
While I haven’t tried it myself, other readers have reported success with it. If you’d like to experiment, I’d suggest following the recipe through step 2 and then transferring over to the slow cooker and adding the remaining ingredients. Similar chili recipes cook for 3–4 hours on low and 4–6 hours on high, but since that depends on the slow cooker, you’ll want to check for doneness earlier than that. The liquid level may need to be adjusted too, as it won’t evaporate as much as it would on the stove.

Definitely beans for us! We like the texture of this great veggie and to us, it isn’t chili without the little guys. However, I’d try this recipe because it has so many other different ingredients that I don’t typically use. I just made some chili this past week and am still using our fresh-roasted-frozen tomatoes from our garden. To be perfectly honest, I just like chili no matter what the recipe! Being in the midwest just means chili and soups in the winter – enough said, huh?

I have bean / no bean rules: if the chili is to be poured over tortilla chips, hotdogs, or baked potatoes – no beans; if the chili is for a meal-in-a-bowl with sides or garnishes – beans. I prefer kidney or black beans in chili. Pinto beans belong in an entirely different dish called Chili Beans (my mom makes these with chorizo and enchilada gravy among other things ?).

When you look at what I know as the original name of the dish, “chile con carne”, I would say that chili should have beans. I even put beans in a paleo chili recipe. If you’d like to experiment, I’d suggest following the recipe through step 2 and then transferring over to the slow cooker and adding the remaining ingredients. Similar chili recipes cook for 3-4 hours on low and 4-6 hours on high, but since that depends on the slow cooker, you’ll want to check for doneness earlier than that. The liquid level may need to be adjusted too as it won’t evaporate as much as it would on the stove. If you do give it a try, I’d love to hear how it turns out!
I’ve made a lot of different chili recipes. This was….hands down…my favorite. I used the turkey plus 1/2 lb of navy beans. It was outstanding! It definitely has a spicy kick so if you are sensitive to spice maybe only 2 tbsps of chili powder.

I’m making your chili right now. It has a lot of spice and although I love it extra spicy my two little ones won’t. Like the heat. I added a teaspoon of honey so try to kill the spice, but now I just taste a little sweet and the spice kicks in on the background. Any suggestions how I can tone down the spice?
Hi Cari, I’d first try adding another can of tomato sauce. You may need to up the other seasonings a little bit to compensate, but it should help dilute the spice a bit. I hope that helps!

This will be my 10th time making this chili for my family. I follow it exactly and it is absolutely phenomenal. I have made it for guests and every one of them have asked for the recipe. We love the addition of the jalapeños, avocado and cilantro to top it off. My husband and I eat clean and this dish is awesome leftover for the perfect lunch too.

Made this last night and it is SO great! My husband was like carrots and celery in chili? But it was AMAZING and anytime I can get extra veggies, I’m all about it. I did end up adding beans, because I only had 1 lb of ground turkey, and omitted the sweet potato. Highly recommend, so glad I found this recipe!

Wow!!! I didn’t include sweet potato as I am carb cycling and was on a low carb day when I made this. So delish. Put a little bit of plain greek yogurt, cilantro and avacado on top. I will definitely be making this over and over.

My husband & I made it this weekend (including the sweet potato but no beans) and it was seriously the best chili we have ever made. All of the flavors and ingredients blend so well together! We actually did 1/2 turkey 1/2 bison meat just to try something different and that was yummy also. Topping it with plain greek yogurt makes it so yummy also!
I kind of liked having it on the stove vs the slow cooker and was pleasantly surprised how everything cooked together so quickly. We will be making this again! It would definitely win a chili contest!

Phenomenal recipe. Generally I take beans in my chili, but I’m sold on the traditional ‘no beans’ version now! The only thing I did differently is I left out the celery. I will definitely be making this again. Thanks for sharing your recipe!

I am following the Keto diet with some modifications and I must say, this is the best turkey chili recipe hands down without beans. I admit that I am a picky eater, but it’s for a good reason…I have IBS. Making this chili was so much fun because of all the veggies, especially the sweet potato; i never have liked sweet potato fries, but in soup it’s so delicious! I used 4 bell peppers and added more of the spices towards the end. My bf was happy with the results too and he didn’t mind it without beans. I can’t wait to try more recipes!

BEST CHILI I’VE EVER HAD. I’ve never been a huge fan of regular chili. I recently started loving white chicken chili. I thought I would give this a try since it was healthy. Oh my word! It’s amazing! I’ve made it twice. First time the potatoes and carrots didn’t get soft enough and it was almost too spicy. I made it again and halved the cayenne. Oh my word! DELICIOUS. Only chili I’ll ever make again!

I love the question about beans. According to many Texan chili chefs, beans are FORBIDDEN. I am an old guy and beans means FIBER so they are pretty much a requirement. Past that, this recipe is a hit! I wholly recommend the avocado slices. If you are looking for more vitamins, try including spinach or kale into the recipe.

Erin, this recipe is going to be one of our go-to for chili for years to come! I followed the recipe except to make a few tweaks based on what we had: one pound of each ground turkey and organic grass fed lean ground beef, one can each dark red kidney beans and pumpkin, and a pumpkin chili spice packet + 1/2 T cumin. We topped ours with Fage plain Greek yogurt, avocado, and freshly grated sharp cheddar. I made it for our family autumn gathering at our lake house, and there wasn’t any left! We’re going to make this get-together a tradition, and we’ll be enjoying this chili many times. Thank you!

This is my new favorite chili recipe! I made it tonight and everyone loved it. I love that there are so many veggies hidden in there that my 3 year old ate without blinking an eye. I am still working to convince my family to be healthy, so I used a pound of turkey and a pound of lean beef. I also added an additional can of tomatoes and a can of black beans. I will be making this again soon and freezing it.

I made this exactly like the recipe called for an only got 6 servings instead of 8 and it was about 350 calories per serving if it would have yielded 8 so now I’m stuck eating a calorie bomb for 6 meals. :( It was also extremely spicy so if you aren’t into spicy foods I would definitely dial back the cayenne.

Great easy recipe, I just threw it all in the crock pot and let it simmer in the seasonings all day…it’s a little spicy for comfort so if your sensitive to spicy foods keep this in mind when. Seasoning. But otherwise great chili great consistency

Sadly I didn’t read through the comments before making. Living in FL I don’t make chili all that often but I’ve been craving some and came across thus recipe on google… HOLY HOT! It was so spicy! My husband and I couldn’t eat it. The flavor is great but the spicy level is on 100. I will definitely try again and modify the amount of spices I put in this.

I am definitely going to try again this coming week but I wanted to give an update on what we did with the first batch.. my husband mentioned all the guys on base LOVE spicy food and would probably demolish this dish, since it made about 9 cups (I know because that’s the size of the Tupperware I used), I told him we can’t waste it and to bring it in.. He said it was a HUGE HIT.. I guess they have an annual chili cooking contest and they all asked my husband to make it this year. One guy said his wife has a gluten allery and since this gluten free he brought the rest home to his wife. The next day he told my husband she loved it! If you love spicy, you’ll love this recipe.

Ita, I think you might have the wrong site? I don’t have a pumpkin corn muffin recipe. If your cornmeal is gluten free, however, you can usually sub wheat flour with a 1:1 all purpose baking blend. I am so happy to love the chili!
I made this chili last night and I love it! Ended up substituting the sweet potato with 12oz of kale and more water to accommodate and a jalapeno for extra kick. Since I’m only cooking for myself I portioned it out and froze half of it for the days when I won’t have the time to cook. Thank you for this recipe it’s my new go-to for chili!

Adding all the onions, peppers, turkey etc all at once to sautee is impossible. The sweet potatoes don’t even touch the pan because there is so much. I had to do the turkey in a separate pan, and even doing as recommended, two pounds at once is impossible to brown the turkey. This is ridiculous.
Hi Daniel, I’ve made this recipe several times, as have many readers and friends, and this is the first I’ve heard of this issue. I never meant for that to be a problem, and I would suggest trying a larger pot/pan next time. (I typically cook it in a 5.5-quart dutch oven and haven’t had issues getting things to fit.)
Thank you for this great recipe! The only modifications I made was to use a little less water, added a touch corn starch to thicken it a tad, and a lot more spices. I typically add more spices than a recipe requires, but that is just a personal preference. I love this chili and was so happy with the addition of the sweet potato!

I made this with lean ground beef, kidney beans and mixed beans. I used 1/3 of recommended amount of chili powder as too much doesn’t agree with my stomach. I did not have the sweet potato or I would have used it. It is delicious and will make again with beef or turkey. Best chili recipe I have made or tasted.

the family loved it! I added one cane red kiddney beans and 3/4 small can chili peppers instead of the chili powder (which I did not have), I also used smoky paprika from penzeys wich gave it a nice touch. It had the perfect kick without being too spicy. You can always cool it down with sour cream or yogurt. I will make again. Thanks!

I’ve made this chili several times and each time, remember how much I love it! It’s so healthy with the veggies and the flavor is crazy good! I add cheese prior to serving (of course) and use tortilla chips to scoop it! So it’s not the healthiest when it reaches my lips, but it’s delicious!

Oh my goodness this is so good, too good. Probably exceeded recommended portions by at least 2X. I tasted this right after adding the last ingredient and thought it might be too spicy but after simmering for 45 minutes the spices mellowed significantly. I chopped the vegetables in 1/2″ chunks which gave it a different consistency and will continue to do this in the future.

In the midst of trying to look for a last minute chili recipe, that consisted of more vegetables, I came across this. Not disappointed! Great chili that has a variation of chili and turkey skillet. I’m Mexican and spicy soups is always my to go to. I added additional adobo sauce. Definitely worth trying.

Another way to speed up chili is in the pressure cooker. I have found my chili has that second day flavor when I make it in the pressure cooker.

This was so good! I followed your quantities exactly, but shredded all the veggies in the food processor (except the sweet potato) as my kids turn up their noses at veggie chunks in stews. I was running short on time, so I just added everything to the instant pot for 20 min (either release method works) after sautéing the turkey. Thanks for another great recipe!! The spice is way to heavy in this recipe. It’s 5 alarm chili with this amount of slice. I had to drain and Rinse the ingredients and add things to cool off the spice. I like spice but this is make you sweat suicide hot. I will do cut the spice in at least half next time.

The flavor is great. Next time I’ll start with only 1/2 t cayenne. During the last cooking I test -tasted it and it was way too hot. So I added 2 cans of rinsed kidney beans plus a cup of frozen corn before it completed cooking.

I have made this turkey chili a few times now. EVERY TIME my hubby makes comments (as he sees me making it and often is helping with the chopping) that is is “wrong” to put sweet potatoes and carrots in chili. Then when he is eating it he says repeatedly – “this chili is so good – you should make it more often” LOL

Today is May 24, 2020. I made your recipe yesterday for the first time. I live in Arizona and it is not really the season for Chili, but I wanted to try it. I love this Chili, the flavor of all the spices and ingrdients are perfect for my taste. I ate it for lunch yesterday and dinner and today I am going to eat it again for lunch. Weather just turned cooler here so I was motivated to try this chili recipe. I’ve never put a TBSP of paprika in anything but I thought “trust Erin. She’s never let you down before”. This chili is by far the BEST I’ve ever had!!! I haaateeee beans so to find a chili recipe without them was hard to come by. I love for my chili to be full of “stuff” and this one does not disappoint! So many veggies and layers of texture! I make this for my husband and I about once a month in the winter (which is like 6 or 7 months out of the year in Kansas City ?) so you know we realllllly love it!

This IS THE BEST chili I’ve ever had and I made it just a bit less spicey so i could customize it! Just delicious and never thought of putting sweet potato in this and what a great addition to the already hearty veggie mix! This is now a staple for will be making often and thank you for all the yumminess and healthy yumminess at that! ???

This chili is so damn delicious! It’s hearty, easy to make, and beyond tasty. What more could you possible ask for!? I live in LA and fall weather finally arrived! This is the PERFECT fall/winter staple! Plus, who doesn’t love leftovers? The recipe makes a lot of food so you’ll be able to enjoy the leftovers the next day (secret: the recipe tastes EVEN BETTER the next day)! I didn’t substitute anything but I do always add more carrots and celery to the recipe. I’m a veggie addict so naturally I gravitate towards lots of vegetables. Enjoy the recipe! This is my favorite chili! Very easy to make, and if I’m in a rush after I cook the veggies and meat, toss that in my instant pot with all the other ingredients (but just add a little water not the full amount) and cook it for 30 mins and it tastes like I simmered it all day!

I just made this yesterday- yum!- in the instant pot. I cooked it for 10 minutes & sautéed the veggies for a few minutes, then took them out, then browned the turkey and adding it all together to cook. Super delicious and a great veggie loaded alternative to chili! We will definitely be having this again soon :)

Made this a few times. The more it sits the better it gets. However I do not use 3 Tbsps of chili powder. That’s major heat…I used 1 Tbsp – was plenty spicy. And I love spicy. Everyone loved it. (and my hubby isn’t a fan of sweet potatoes) He asks me to make it!!

First of all, I’m a “chilianykindofway” person. I typically add extra ingredients to stretch it out or put over pasta or quinoa. I made this recipe last week and when my kids remark “MOM THIS CHILI IS FIRE!” I know it’s a keeper. Mind you, my children are 25, 26, 30 and 31. I followed the directions using garbanzo beans and I had a combo if butternut squash and yams (because they came precut) and threw it all together then sat on the stove for what ended up being hours. Wow, it was really tasty..and it was completely gone before noon next day.

We make this every other week and eat it for lunches. It’s part of our routine now. So many Turkey Chili’s lack flavor but but this doesn’t at all. It’s chock full of veggies and Turkey and has a rich flavor. Addictive. We top ours with avocado and fresh jalapeños. Thanks for a great recipe!

I love this chili! I’ve made a few little alterations. I leave out the tomato sauce and add some chicken stock. I use 1 lb of turkey and add a can of garbanzo beans. I always add the sweet potato! My family loves it!

Making this now and it smells delicious. I am skeptical about the calorie count, though. I put it through two calculators (Verywellfit and Happy Forks) and it came out as either 250 or 337! I know calculators are imperfect at best, but I would say the recipe calculation here for 1/8th of the recipe is reading low.

I have been making this chili recipe for two years now and it’s always a huge hit. I got lazy and just throw everything in my crockpot now because mom life.. and it’s still so good! I just made this the other day and having it for the first time today. Its excellent-very tasty and i added the sweet potato. BUUTTT the 1 teaspoon Cayenne is too much I feel. I added 1/4 tsp and my mouth is on fire….I’m not sure why it’s sooo spicy b/c the other ingredients i measured to the recipe. I’ll have to adjust it to 1/8 tsp next time. No one else had this problem?

I’ve made this 4 times now and we love it! The only thing that I do differently is that I bloom the spices in the browned turkey for a couple of minutes (stirring) before I add the liquid and the rest of the ingredients. I always add the sweet potato for nutrition,….it’s hard to tell that it’s even there. A combination of red and green peppers is nice. I love that it makes a lot so that I can freeze in my Souper Cube portions for nights when I need a break from cooking.

Oh my goodness Erin- this chili is absolutely fantastic! The only time consuming part is chopping all the vegetables; but, it is so worth the effort. I highly recommend adding the dollop of plain greek yogurt to each bowl- it really tames the spices down nicely.

I’ve made this recipe for several gatherings and parties and it is always a hit. I can’t tel you how many times I’ve shared the recipe (upon request!). Don’t leave out the sweet potato. I usually add a finely diced jalapeño just to bring the heat up a little more. This chili pairs perfectly with cornbread. It’s perfect and healthy too- I love love love this recipe!

I stopped including sodium info because it can vary so much depending upon what products you used, and I found a lot of conflicting info online, so ultimately I didn’t feel comfortable publishing it because sometimes it wasn’t even in the ballpark. If you’d like to calculate it yourself, there are lots of free tools online (myfitnesspal.com is popular). I hope that helps!
This is our very favorite chili. I love the flavors and the ground turkey is such dense meat, it is truly satisfying. My husband prefers without the carrots and celery, so I add extra chiles – poblanos and serranos or anaheims – whatever I have on hand. I also add the spices in the first step to cook them down a bit before proceeding with the rest of the recipe. This dish is truly spectacular tasting. No one I’ve served it to guessed it was ground turkey and we all appreciate how remarkably healthy it is. I can have a very generous serving for very few Weight Watcher points, which is a HUGE bonus for me.

Prepare to be blown away by this turkey chili – it is the best I have ever tasted. I simmered it for the full 3 hours for a rich, thick dish with a nice little kick. I took it to a girl’s weekend for the Friday night dinner and we ended up eating it for Saturday’s dinner also with the host gladly keeping the leftovers for a last solo feast after we left!
