Why hello there! I’d like to introduce you to my fall dinner uniform, Healthy Slow Cooker Buffalo Chicken Sweet Potatoes.

plate of slow cooker Buffalo chicken stuffed sweet potatoes

I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve made this crock pot recipe for shredded buffalo chicken with Greek yogurt sauce since I first shared it last year. In a direct match up between our frequency of eating it and the number of plaid shirts in my closet (my other fall uniform), I might even give it to the healthy buffalo chicken.

If you’ve hung out with me September through March, you know this is not a light statement.

I own A LOT of plaid and somehow keep finding a need to purchase more. A few weeks ago, two of our friends asked me to estimate the number of plaid shirts in my closet. I guessed seven, then went home and counted.

Um, I forgot a few.

Also, do dresses count? Please say no, because I kind of have my eye on this one. It would be so cute with boots!

OK, enough with buffalo check. Let’s get to the buffalo chicken recipe!

Healthy Buffalo Chicken

This Slow Cooker Buffalo Chicken recipe is one of a handful of healthy crock pot chicken recipes on my site that I make over and over.

Ben loves it, I love it, it’s beyond easy, and despite its decadent taste, it’s low calorie too.

Whether you need a low-maintenance weeknight meal or a healthy reset after a particularly indulgent weekend, this Healthy Slow Cooker Buffalo Chicken hits the spot every time.

Why I Love These Buffalo Chicken Sweet Potatoes

I stole the idea to pair buffalo chicken with sweet potatoes from a friend who ordered a side of buffalo dipping sauce with her sweet potato fries at dinner.

At first, I thought it sounded odd, but the combination of the spicy buffalo sauce with the sweetness of the potatoes was addictive. I knew I had to try it at home.

Although I’m no stranger to having fries for dinner, I wanted this slow cooker buffalo chicken to fit a healthy weeknight dinner theme, so I served the shredded chicken over baked sweet potatoes instead. Dynamite!

More Sweet Potatoes!

You can bake your sweet potatoes in the air fryer too with this Air Fryer Sweet Potato recipe.

Or if you’re set on sweet potato fries, try these baked Sweet Potato Fries, Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fries, or Sweet Potato Wedges.

Crock Pot full of healthy Buffalo shredded chicken

The baked sweet potatoes gave me the sweet-spicy flavor pairing that I was after but in a lighter, healthier way. They also provide a built-in serving of (unfried) veg.

For maximum simplicity, I made the buffalo chicken in the slow cooker. I poured the buffalo sauce right over the top, and by the time the chicken was ready, it was fall-apart tender.

The final flourish is a blue cheese–Greek yogurt drizzle. If you aren’t into blue cheese, we can’t be friends you can swap for feta cheese or omit the blue cheese completely. These Slow Cooker Buffalo Chicken Sweet Potatoes will still be delicious without it.

In addition to being a tasty weeknight dinner, the healthy Buffalo chicken stuffed sweet potatoes are also easy to multiply for a crowd.

If you have any game watches or football parties on your agenda—events for which the presence of buffalo chicken teeters between “strongly encouraged” and “mandatory”—this recipe is a great way to feed the hungry hoards while leaving a little extra wiggle room in your diet too.

Slow Cooker Buffalo Chicken Sweet Potatoes

Juicy slow cooker buffalo chicken served over sweet potatoes and topped with a creamy yogurt drizzle. You’ll love this easy, healthy crock pot recipe!

Prep: 10 minutes
Cook: 4 hours 30 minutes
Total: 4 hours 40 minutes

Servings: 4 servings

Ingredients

For the Slow Cooker Buffalo Chicken:

  • 1 1/2 pounds boneless skinless chicken breasts (about 3)
  • 3/4 cup hot sauce such as Frank’s
  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cayenne
  • 4 sweet potatoes
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 1 tablespoon water to create a slurry
  • Chopped green onions for serving

For the Blue Cheese Yogurt Dressing (omit to make dairy free):

  • 1/2 cup nonfat plain Greek yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon white vinegar
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/3 cup crumbled blue cheese plus additional for serving

Instructions

  • Lightly coat a slow cooker with nonstick spray (I used a 6-quart but believe a smaller size would be fine too). Place the chicken in the bottom of the slow cooker.
  • Place the hot sauce, coconut oil, salt, garlic powder, and cayenne in a microwave-safe bowl or measuring cup. Microwave until the coconut oil is melted (about 45 seconds), then stir until smooth. If you prefer not to use the microwave, melt the ingredients together in a small saucepan on the stove. Pour the sauce over the chicken. Cover the slow cooker, then cook for 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 hours on high or 4 to 5 hours on low, until the chicken is cooked through and reaches an internal temperature of 165 degrees F. Remove the chicken from crockpot and shred.
  • About 30 minutes before the chicken is done, bake the sweet potatoes: Preheat your oven to 400 degrees F. Prick the sweet potatoes all over with a fork, then place them on a foil-lined baking sheet. Bake until the sweet potatoes are tender, about 45 minutes to 1 hour, depending upon the size of your sweet potato. Turn off the oven and leave the sweet potatoes inside to keep them warm.
  • Once the chicken is shredded and while the sweet potatoes bake, mix the cornstarch and 1 tablespoon water together to create a slurry. Add it to the cooking liquid in the slow cooker, then whisk to combine. Cover the slow cooker and cook on high for 30 minutes to allow the sauce to thicken, stirring once halfway through. Once thick, return the chicken to the slow cooker and toss to coat.
  • For the blue cheese yogurt topping: In a small bowl, whisk together all of the ingredients—Greek yogurt, milk, white vinegar, black pepper, and blue cheese. Split open the sweet potatoes, then top with the crock pot buffalo chicken, a drizzle of the blue cheese dressing, and green onions. Enjoy hot.

  1. i ammmm dying to try the recipe. while the boyfriend isnt much of a sweet potato person, im gonna do sweet potato for me and regular potato for him. i will report you back IMMEDIATELY.

  2. I’m not a fan of “cleanses” after a vacation either, that just doesn’t work well with me and I don’t think it’s healthy either. I prefer just listening to my body! And right now my body is telling me to eat these sweet potatoes ASAP!!! ;)

  3. buffalo chicken + sweet potatoes sounds like the best combination ever!  So pumped to try these beauties!

  4. This looks wonderful!  Can you do a travel post about your trip, where you stayed and what you did?  Planning a trip to NY soon and would love to hear about yours, thanks!

    1. Lisa, this was actually my SIXTH time in NYC if you can believe it! I have an earlier travel post here (https://www.wellplated.com/what-to-see-and-eat-in-new-york/) that I am hoping to update with the new places we tried this trip  in the next few weeks. So that you have the info now, my new favorites from this trip were ABC Cocina, Buvette (SO CUTE! Get there early), and L’Artusi. Buvette doesn’t take reservations, but you’ll definitely want them for the other two.

  5. I LOVE spicy and salty with sweet potatoes. This is such a perfect idea! I also always feel like eating nothing but vegetables after a weekend of splurging and it never happens? Chocolate always wins! These would definitely be a great compromise though!

  6. just had to come back and let you know that it was super delicious!!!!! i will be making them everytime we crave baked potatoes now :)

    1. Yay!!!! Magan, I’m so happy to hear that you enjoyed them as much as we did. Thanks for trying the recipe and for leaving this lovely review!

  7. I love every one of your recipes! I use the for almost of all my meal preps every week. :)

Instead of using chicken, would it work to throw tofu in the crockpot and cook it the same way for a vegetarian option?

    1. Charlie, this note totally makes my day!!! I’m so happy that you enjoy my recipes. As far as your question, this isn’t something I’d recommend, because I think the tofu would fall apart and become mushy in the crock pot. You could try cooking into according to this method, then tossing it in Buffalo sauce. It would definitely be an experiment though, so use your best judgement.

  8. What size sweet potato did you use to calculate the nutrition information since they vary greatly in size? Recipe looks amazing!

    1. Hi Jordan! I selected “medium” when plugging the recipe into myfitnesspal.com. You can calc the exact recipe there for free if you’d like to use your own size of sweet potato. I hope you enjoy the recipe!

  9. I made this tonight and really liked it. The bleu cheese sauce balances out the spice. And so good with the sweet potato. It was so simple too. I will be making this again

    1. I am so happy to hear how much you enjoyed it Tiffani! Thank you so much for trying the recipe and taking time to leave this kind review.

  10. I question the non-fat yogurt and blue cheese as PALEO. Ompliant…. not in anything I’ve been taught about PALEO….. PALEO Is NON-DAIRY……..

    1. Hi Winney! You are correct that the dairy is not Paleo. However, the sauce is completely optional. Simply omit it, and you will still have a delicious and healthy meal.

  11. This looks great! Would it ruin the recipe to omit the cornstarch? (Cornstarch isn’t allowed on Whole30.) Do you have any substitutions for cornstarch?

    1. Analysa, if you omit the cornstarch, the sauce will not be as thick. Is arrowroot starch whole 30 approved? If yes, that’s a great substitute!

  12. Is there a mild alternative to the buffalo sauce? I’m just worried that it will be too spicy for my liking! Other than that, I cant wait to try this recipe!

    1. Hi Alex! You could see if a brand like Frank’s makes a mild red pepper sauce. To be honest, there really isn’t a good swap otherwise. I would suggest cutting down on the amount of Buffalo sauce and seeing if that helps. It’s really not too terribly spicy to begin with, so you can always add less.

  13. Hi there ,
This recipes looks amazing. I don’t like blue cheese and was wondering if there was a substitute I could use ?
    Thanks !!

    1. Shannon – friends of mine like to use ranch dressing as an alternative to a blue cheese dressing. I LOVE blue cheese, but if you want an alternative, ranch might be an option.

  14. My husband and I loved this, and he generally hates blue cheese anything. Now he’s asking if I can make that dressing for work salads.
    Thanks for another great recipe!

    1. Erin, YAY!! I am so glad to hear you both loved this and that it converted your husband into a blue cheese fan. Enjoy every bite, and thanks for leaving this lovely review.

  15. I made this over the weekend. It was so easy and tasty! The sweet potatoes and the buffalo chicken were such a great combo. I never would have thought to pair them together. My boyfriend also loved it and has requested to make this recipe a regular part of our dinner rotation. Thanks, Erin!

    1. YAY Lauren! I’m so glad to hear you and your boyfriend enjoyed the recipe. I appreciate your taking the time to leave such a nice review!

  16. We had these for dinner tonight and they were DELISH! I wanted to share a trick I tried. We are big fans of slow cooker liners in our home. So I spread a piece of foil in the bottom of the SC, placed the scrubbed and poked sweet potatoes on the foil then placed the liner over the potatoes and tucked the edges into the crock edges. This allowed us to eat much quicker after work! I then followed the recipe for the chicken. The one thing I did different with the sauce is we used a sauce that is sold here in NC called Num-Num sauce. It’s a cross between BBQ and buffalo sauce and comes in mild and spicy. I used a little of both then added sriacha to mine before I ate it since I like my food a little spicier than the hubby does. They were great!

    1. YAY! I’m so glad you enjoyed the recipe…thanks for taking the time to leave this wonderful review! Num-Num sauce sounds delicious! And that is an excellent cooking tip, so thank you for sharing that as well.

  17. I put this in myfitness pal exactly as written and it says it is 745 Calories per service (serves 4)

How did you get the nutritional facts that you listed on this?

    http://www.myfitnesspal.com/recipe/view/243015301844989

    1. Hi Jessie! I go into this in more detail in my FAQs, but I do use My Fitness Pal. Different calculations can vary, depending upon the brands of ingredients that you buy, the size of the vegetables used, etc. I provide this information as a service, rather than a something that is guaranteed to be 100% factually accurate, which again I clarify in the FAQs. If exact calorie counts are important to you, then I recommend that you calculate it yourself using the exact ingredients that you have at home. The information also depends on serving size. For example, if you calculate this recipe with 100% of the blue cheese sauce, it would be higher in calories. The serving size in the nutritional information actually calls for just 2 tablespoons of the sauce. I hope that that is helpful!

  18. Made this for dinner tonight and was very pleased with it.  With the amount of chicken I had it made enough for 6 servings, and I gave us each half a sweet potato, based on their size.  The recipe came together very nicely.  When I was looking for blue cheese, I found a smoked blue, which I bought, and which worked well in the recipe.  Next time I make this I would have to use less hot sauce – it turned out hotter than my stomach can take and than my husband prefers.  It felt good to use my crockpot for something other than granola and yogurt.  Thanks for a keeper recipe.  (My rating is less than 5 stars because of the heat level.)4 stars

    1. I’m so glad you enjoyed the recipe, Susan! The smoked blue cheese sounds delicious. Thanks so much for taking the time to leave this wonderful review!

  19. I made this early this week and it was probably one of the best sweet potato recipes I’ve made! The chicken was so delicious it shredded very easily! My husband is not a fan of blue cheese but he loved the sauce! I will be making this again for sure! 5 stars

    1. Leah, I am so happy that you and your husband both loved this! It’s one of our favorite recipes too. Thanks so much for trying the recipe and taking time to leave this wonderful rating and review!

  20. I just wanted to say that I’ve already made this 3 times and it is my husband’s absolute FAVORITE! The flavors go together so well (what a surprising and delicious combo with the buffalo chicken and sweet potato) and it’s easy to make. I’m a bit sensitive to spicy and it has just the right amount of kick. Thanks for sharing!5 stars

  21. Big hit in my house, my boys ate it on Milano rolls with mozzarella cheese and they loved it. I had mine on the sweet potatoes and it was yummy!

    1. Hi Jennifer! I’m so glad the recipe was a winner for all. :) Thanks for taking the time to share this great review!

  22. No idea why I’ve never commented before– this recipe has become a favorite in our house!! I’ve made it at least four times since stumbling across it this past fall. THANK YOU for such a delish recipe!!5 stars

    1. Hi Sari! Thank YOU for taking the time to leave this wonderful comment! It truly means so much to me that you gave the recipe a try and that it’s become a family favorite.

  23. Thinking about trying this recipe this weekend for party I’m attending. I’m also in the middle of Whole30 and have Tessemae’s compliant buffalo sauce. Do you think that could be added to the sauce too ?? Or just stick with the Frank’s hot sauce? I like spicy so that’s why I ask!

    1. Hi Emily, I absolutely love Tessamae’s products! I’ve never tried this particular one, but as long as it is similar to a buffalo sauce, I think it would be totally fine to use in this recipe. I hope you enjoy it!

    1. Hi Laura, yes, I think you could double it. The cook time may be slightly different since the crock pot will be fuller, so you’ll want to watch it and adjust accordingly. I hope you enjoy the recipe!

    1. Wow, Amanda! I’m so glad the recipe is a winner with your family! Thank you so much for leaving this lovely note. :)

  24. I made this, but I think using frozen chicken was my mistake. Unfortunately the sauce was very watery and didn’t thicken until I added a lot more cornstarch. Would recommend making this with already thawed chicken:)3 stars

    1. Hi Heather, using frozen chicken would definitely cause the sauce to be watery. You’re right on that thawed chicken is the way to go!

  25. I made this for the first time a couple months ago, and it has become a weekly go-to recipe. Love the simplicity and the flavor is great (and I don’t typically like buffalo sauce)! This was the first recipe that I tried of yours and have since made quite a few other eats and treats I’ve discovered on here.5 stars

    1. Morgan, I’m so glad to hear the recipe is a winner for you! Thanks so much for this kind comment! I truly appreciate it. :)

  26. This has definitely become a staple in the Modis house! It is always a big hit at parties. Can be used with sweet potatoes, rolls, chips, etc. Remember to bring a side bottle of Franks (or stronger) to appease the true heat seekers5 stars

    1. I’m so excited to hear the recipe is a winner in your family Louie! Thanks so much for taking the time to leave this awesome review!

  27. Thank you thank you THANK YOU for this recipe!! I make this once a week and eat it on sweet potatoes, on salad, in wraps, etc. My nutritionist has given this 2 thumbs up. I’m dairy free, so I add chopped avocado on top for some creaminess. This has become a staple in my house and I’ve passed this recipe along to family and friends alike! 5 stars

    1. HOORAY Libby, I’m so glad to hear this recipe is a winner for you! Thanks so much for taking the time to leave this fabulous review.

  28. This recipe is SO delicious I cannot believe how low these calories are! This will definitely be in our dinner rotation. I am so excited to try more of your recipes!!5 stars

    1. Shelly, I’m so glad to hear you enjoyed this recipe! Thank you so much for taking the time to leave this awesome review!

  29. Please excuse  my ignorance as I am not very knowledgable about cooking (lol), but does this call for white distilled vinegar or white wine vinegar? Wanting to make this tomorrow :)

    1. Hi Megan! Not a silly question at all. It’s regular white vinegar (not white wine vinegar). I hope you enjoy the recipe!

  30. This is my and the Hubby’s new favorite dinner! I leave out the cayenne because I can’t handle the heat. Tonight I made it with turkey breasts instead of chicken breasts. It was BANGIN’!!! I love your recipes!5 stars

  31. Being into health and fitness i am always looking for creative ways to eat healthy and not have to constantly eat bland chicken breast and rice. Needless to say these were awesome!5 stars

  32. I don’t think I own any plaid (kind of strange for a New Englander!). Maybe I need to come over and borrow some of yours. And you can also feed me these stuffed potatoes! Deal? :-)

  33. This is one of my favorite things to eAT. My husband loves it too, we have probably made about two dozen times since you first posted. We just crumble blue cheese on top and skip the dressing. The flavor of this is so great…..my mouth is watering just thinking of it!!!!4 stars

    1. Amanda, I’m so glad to hear this recipe is a winner for you! Thanks for taking the time to report back. :)

  34. It is so funny that you just posted this today, because I made this again the other night! It is seriously one of my favorite recipes on this site!5 stars

  35. Nice Erin! Love the balance of sweet and spicy. Still haven’t tried preparing sweet potatoes like this so will have to give it a try some time (:

  36. Sounds and looks great Erin, I bet my daughter would love this….she loves sweet potatoes…..think I may try it too, I’m not really a sweet potato fan, but with the spicy chicken on top, it sounds like it might be a winner…..your husband is lucky to have you for a wife….bet he never goes hungry…… you sure feed him well…..

Rating this before I make it, because I’m sure it will be a 5*….will try to get back on here and let you know if I remember…..5 stars

    1. Hi JD, yes, the hot sauce in this dish does give it a higher sodium content. If sodium is something you are watching, you could look into other hot sauce options, enjoy this recipe sparingly, or check out one of these other great chicken recipes if you prefer to avoid this one entirely: https://www.wellplated.com/tag/chicken/

  37. LOVE buffalo chicken!! I definitely like the idea of using it to top a sweet potato. The chicken would also be great done in the pressure cooker (more ways to use your new pressure cooker!)

  38. Perfect weekend exchange for buffalo wings!

Made this over the weekend and it was delicious.  Not too spicy and everything perfectly complimented each item.

I changed the coconut oil for olive oil because i don’t like the flavour coconut oil. 5 stars

    1. Rebecca, I am so so excited to hear that! Thanks so much for trying the recipe and taking time to leave this kind review.

  39. I love sweet potatoes and buffalo chicken, but never thought to put them together. Thanks for the cool idea and recipe!

  40. This is such a creative combo! Brilliant recipe.  Being short on time,  I made the chicken in the instant pot (6 minutes on HP), using 4 oz buffalo sauce + 4 oz water and about a tablespoon of ranch seasoning I had on hand.  I thickened the sauce at the end with cornstarch as I was shredding the chicken.  It was delicious and has earned a spot in our regular dinner rotation.  Thank you!  Your recipes are fabulous. 5 stars

    1. YAY Krista, I’m so glad to hear you enjoyed this! Thanks so much for sharing your notes on adapting this to the Instant Pot.

  41. This is one of my go-to recipes. I’ve made it at least 5 times and am making it again tonight. And LOVE the blue cheese sauce. The combo of all these ingredients is genius. 5 stars

    1. YAY!!! <3 I am so so soooo happy to hear that Elizabeth! Thank you for taking time to leave this wonderful review!

  42. I would love to try this recipe. However, my husband and I do not like blue cheese. Do you have a recommendation for a different type of sauce to top it with? Thank you!

    1. Hi Christy! I’d suggest swapping feta. It’s also good without the sauce if you prefer to omit it. I hope you enjoy the recipe!

  43. I have read all the comments and i may be the only one who noted the sauce was too hot!…i used Lillie Q’s Hot Sauce… Is it that much hotter than Frank’s? How can I still achieve the flavor but not so spicy?

    1. Hi Vanessa, I haven’t tried Lillie Q’s hot sauce, so I’m not sure how it compares to Frank’s as far as spiciness goes. Buffalo sauce generally is on the spicier side, but there may be some mild versions of buffalo sauce at the grocery store!

  44. Was just as easy as it was delicious! If looking to cut down on time, try microwaveable sweet potatoes, and replace the dressing with Bolthouse Blue Cheese Dressing (made from Greek yogurt, so same flavor)5 stars

  45. This was delicious and so healthy!  We had a buffalo chicken slow cooker recipe, but it was salty and we agreed that this recipe is our new go to!  I ate this 4 days in a row for lunch and can’t wait to make it again!  5 stars

    1. Jordan, I’m so glad to hear you enjoyed the recipe! Thanks so much for taking the time to leave this stellar review!

  46. Just made this for my family and everyone loved it!  They said it is definitely on the “make it again” list!  Thanks for the recipe!5 stars

    1. YAY Kellye! Thanks so much for taking the time to leave this wonderful review—I’m glad to hear the recipe is a winner!

  47. About to make this recipe for the second time! :) it is a complete love in our house & I even shared with work friends who loved it as well!5 stars

    1. HOORAY Dianna! I’m glad this recipe is a winner. Thanks for taking the time to share this great review!

  48. I can see why people love this recipe. But for me, it was just “okay.” I am not a huge sweet potato fan but I figured I would give it a whirl. Turns out, I still don’t LOVE sweet potatoes! But thank you for posting the recipe and giving me something new to try!3 stars

  49. Hey there,

What would happen if you left out the coconut oil(if trying to make it lower fat)? Made this recipe last night and LOVED ittttt!!!!5 stars

    1. Hi Alexis, the coconut oil helps the sauce coat the chicken, and adding a little oil or butter is common in similar recipes, like hot wings. I haven’t tried the recipe without it, but you could definitely experiment!

  50. Can this be adapated for the stove top? Or could I cook it longer on low if I use frozen chicken?  I’d like to do this as a weeknight meal and would need it to sit in the crockpot for about ten hours or just cook it on the stove. Thank you!

    1. Hi Stacy! I don’t recommend frozen chicken, as that can cause food safety concerns. I do think you could cook this on the stovetop though! I would recommend doing the sauce and chicken separately. Reduce the sauce with the cornstarch in a pot, and then toss it with cooked, shredded chicken. If you need a recipe for how to cook chicken, I have one here: https://www.wellplated.com/how-to-cook-shredded-chicken/

  51. Love love love this recipe.  It had become a staple in our household.  Have you tried to make the chicken in the instant pot yet?  I’m hoping yes and if so, any tips?4 stars

    1. Hi Amanda, I’m so glad you enjoy the recipe! I have not made this in the Instant Pot, so I can’t offer specific experience, but reader Krista did try it and left her notes in a comment toward the end of the thread. She did 6 minutes on high pressure, 4 ounces of buffalo sauce, and 4 ounces water, and then thickened with cornstarch afterward. If you decide to experiment, I’d love to know how it goes!

  52. Made this again last night. It’s on constant rotation at our house. The blue cheese sauce is mmmmmmm5 stars

  53. Oh my gosh this was delicious! I was leary about trying this as I don’t tend to cook healthy but couldn’t pass up a recipe using Frank’s or blue cheese. I will definitely be making this again and again and again :)5 stars

    1. Dede, I am so thrilled to hear this! Thank you for letting me know and for taking time to leave this glowing review.

  54. I normally don’t bother to comment on the recipe posts I try but I just had to let you know that this was amazing and offer a HUGE thanks for the recipe!! Hubby ate his chicken in a wrap and loved it as well. And I made this in my instant so BONUS it only took about an hour from start to finish! Thanks again so, SO much!5 stars

  55. This is the best recipe i’ve made from this website. Tons of flavor and perfect serving sizes. MUST MAKE!5 stars

  56. So delicious that it is hard to imagine that your calorie count is correct (although I am sure it is). So glad to have some leftovers for tomorrow.4 stars

    1. Suzanne, isn’t it great when healthy food tastes great too?! Thanks so much and so happy you loved it! If you’d like to calc the cals yuorself, you can do so for free at myfitnesspal.com (that’s what I use).

  57. Looking forward to trying this tonight! I have been searching for your video on how to prep the buffalo chicken in slow cooker… is that video on here?

  58. Love this recipe! Made the chicken in the IP while the sweet potatoes baked in the oven, so easy and delicious. My only regret was not doubling the amount chicken so I had more leftovers!

    1. Hi Andrew, I have not tried this recipe in an Instant Pot, so unfortunately I don’t have any specific guidance to offer. Chicken breasts usually cook in about 7-10 minutes on high/manual, but I can’t guarantee that the sauce is enough liquid for the pot to come to pressure. If you decide to experiment, I’d love to hear how it goes.

  59. I make this recipe ALL THE TIME. It’s an absolute favorite for me. Easy to make, always plenty leftover. I am so happy I found this recipe ?5 stars

  60. I have made this meal more times than I can count (to include for dinner today, yay) and it never disappoints. It is my favorite, most shared, crockpot meal to date. My husband doesn’t typically go for spicy/heat but he also really enjoys this meal (however I’m usually helping myself to the scraps he leaves behind on his plate…I’m telling you, this is my favorite!!). I typically serve this alongside roasted brussel sprouts, broccoli, green beans etc. and am so sad when the leftovers are gone (which is basically when I start scheming a plan to get it back in the dinner rotation ASAP).5 stars

  61. I made this for dinner tonight. First recipe from this blog that I’ve tried but will definitely be following and making more. This was delicious. I never woukkd have thought about putting it over sweet potatoes but it evened out the heat perfectly. And the homemade blue cheese dressing to drizzle on top. So, so yummy. Five pleased family members, including the pickiest.5 stars

    1. Jeanne, I’m so glad you’re here! And I’m happy to hear the recipe was a hit. Thanks for taking the time to share this review!

  62. This is a staple recipe in our house. We love it so much! And since live in Texas and eat avocados on EVERYTHING, we swap out the dressing for sliced avocados, and it is AMAZING … and it’s a great Whole 30 compliant addition!5 stars

  63. Hi!! I’ve made this recipe multiple times and it’s so yummy!! I just have a quick question on the nutrition facts at the bottom: it says the serving is for one sweet potato and 2 tbs of yogurt sauce, but does it include some buffalo chicken as well? If so how much? (Sorry if that’s a silly question haha) thanks for the recipe!!

    1. Hi Anna-Kae, I’m so glad to hear you enjoy the recipe! The nutrition estimate does include the buffalo chicken. Thanks for reporting back!

    1. Thank you, Katie! I would suggest thawing the leftovers in the fridge the night before you want to eat them. When ready to eat, gently reheat in the microwave until heated through. I hope this helps!

    1. Hi Martine! I have not tried the recipe with this chicken thighs, but you could experiment with them. I hope you enjoy the recipe!

  64. Healthy, easy, and PERFECT for those days when you just really want some buffalo chicken! The spicy, sweet combo is undeniably delicious!5 stars

    1. Hi Erica! I’m sorry you didn’t enjoy this recipe. I know it can be frustrating to try a new recipe and not have it work out, so I really wish you would’ve enjoyed it! If you try it again, you could just make the buffalo chicken without the sweet potatoes.

  65. Recipe sounds delicious and is in my rotation to try.  Would you please provide protein per serving- I did not see that listed in the nutritional information. Many thanks!

    1. Hi Nancy! It’s about 44 grams per serving; if you’d like to calc the nutritional info for a recipe at any point, you can also use myfitnesspal.com, which is free!

  66. I love this recipe!! I’m curious if you could substitute another oil in place of the coconut oil? I do Weight Watchers and the point difference between coconut oil and olive oil is a lot!

      1. Erin,
I LOVE this recipe. Thank you! Not only is it great on sweet potatoes, but I use the chicken for salads, naan pizzas, etc. I’m now invested in trying more of your recipes! P.S. where did you live in Kansas? I’m from there myself. I now live in Chicago and have visited downtown Milwaukee several times. :-)

        1. Thank you so much for your kind comment, Nicole! How cool – I’m from Wichita! I hope you continue to enjoy the other recipes you try!

  67. Erin, this recipe is amazing!!!  I was missing buffalo sauce after cutting out dairy and this sauce is better than any traditional buffalo sauce I’ve ever had.  I think we’ve made it 5 times in the past month.  Thank you for posting such a delicious recipe!5 stars

    1. I’m so happy to hear that this recipe was a hit, Leslie! Thank you for taking the time to share this kind review!

  68. Made this and it was absolutely delicious. Trying to minimise sodium. How would this work with only half the hot sauce. Or could I substitute part out? Maybe water? Thanks.5 stars

    1. Hi Jenine, I’m so happy to hear that you enjoyed this recipe! I haven’t tried making it with only half the hot sauce, but you could experiment with half water. If you decide to experiment, I’d love to hear how it goes!

  69. The chicken was not ready to be shredded after the hour and a half time. So I just took the chicken out, mixed the starch in and added the chicken back in and shredded when done. Not much of a difference I would think. Yummy!

  70. I am three weeks into a round of Whole 30, and I have made this recipe 3 weeks in a row. I love that it takes 5 minutes to prep, and the pairing of the buffalo sauce with the sweet potatoes is perfection! My husband requests this dish often! 5 stars

    1. I’m so happy to hear that you’ve enjoyed this, Michaela! Thank you for taking the time to share this kind review!

  71. My husband and I are both home sick and in self-imposed q; therefore, we can’t run to the store for ingredients so I was missing a few.I thawed my chicken and ordered Frank’s hot sauce from Amazon and today I made your Healthy Buffalo Chicken on Sweet Potatoes. I was scared to death about that much hot sauce and cayenne but the flavor is perfect! I just put the shredded chicken back in the pot and am waiting to serve. The chicken and sauce is out of this world and so I know it will be delicious over the sweet potatoes and next time I will be able to make the blue cheese yogurt sauce. Thank you, Erin, this is fantastic!!!!5 stars

    1. I’m so pleased to hear that you enjoyed this recipe, Pam! Thank you for sharing this kind review!

      1. Had to check back in and say it WAS delicious over the sweet potatoes. It should be noted I had a few more forkfulls of the Buffalo chicken as I put the leftovers away. ?Can’t wait to try it with the blue cheese yogurt sauce once we’re well!!!!

  72. It looks like a wonderful recipe, but I got rid of my slow cooker when I got my Instapot. Small kitchen so room for only one. How would you adapt this to an Instapot? Thanks very much!!!

    1. Hi Bill! I’d suggest making your chicken according to this post for shreddedInstant Pot Chicken and reducing the sauce separately with the cornstarch in a pot, then tossing it with cooked, shredded chicken.

  73. The coconut oil gave it a weird taste. Will sub a little butter next time.   Was so surprised it wasn’t too spicy. I did stir a little a Greek yogurt into one portion to suit the taste of one family member who doesn’t do any heat at all.

    1. Hi Suzanne! Thanks for trying the recipe, and I hope you enjoy it even more with butter next time!

  74. The coconut oil gave them such a strange taste I wasn’t a fan at first. I did it with butter the next time and fell in love! These are such a great combo! I could eat them every week. Question, what would be a good veggie pairing for this? Trying to spend my time upping my veggie intake. Again thanks for this amazing recipe.5 stars

    1. I’m so pleased that you enjoyed the recipe, Jami! For veggies, I think a side of Roasted Frozen Broccoli would be tasty!

  75. I’d love to try this recipe but I don’t have a slow cooker. How would you make the chicken on the stovetop? Do you think that would also work well? I loved your first recipe I tried am excited to try more!

    1. Hi Jenna! I do think you could cook this on the stovetop. I would recommend doing the sauce and chicken separately. Reduce the sauce with the cornstarch in a pot, and then toss it with cooked, shredded chicken. If you need a recipe for how to cook chicken, I have one here: https://www.wellplated.com/how-to-cook-shredded-chicken/.

    1. Christina, I’m afraid that there’s not a swap for classic hot sauce here—I’ve never heard of a more mild version. If you’d like it less hot, I’d simply use less or try to tone it down with some honey and then serve with Greek yogurt to cool it off further.

  76. I can’t wait to try this recipe! As a full-time teacher and single parent, I’m always on the hunt for good food that doesn’t require me to be in the kitchen all day to prep. Thanks so much for including the video.

  77. Are you suppose to take the shredded chicken out of the crockpot and into a bowl while the slurry sauce cooks for those 30 min?

  78. My #1 favorite go-to recipe. I make this at least twice a month. It’s so hands-off, I prefer to cook the chicken on low but have done it on high in a pinch! Perfect with the addition of sweet potatoes & buffalo chicken is my favorite!5 stars

    1. Peg, you could do regular white potatoes or serve it on a bun or as a lettuce wrap or regular wrap to name a few!

  79. I made this with 5 chicken breasts instead of 3 and just added a little more hot sauce, not much more. Kept all the other ratios the same. I had enough to load up 4 medium sized sweet potatoes and used the leftover chicken and homemade greek yogurt blue cheese dressing to make buffalo chicken dip to serve with some celery. Added half a block of cream cheese and and a big handful of shredded cheese. SO GOOD! Will definitely make again!5 stars

  80. Erin, this was the best meal I have ever made. My son, Chris, and I did it together. He took a picture and it looked just like yours. Thank you so much, Erin. You are a blessing from the Lord.5 stars

  81. Really great recipe to make on a Sunday… lasts till almost the end of the week so long as you don’t eat it all in one or two sittings :)

Definitely will be making again! The blue cheese/greek yogurt dressing is also just as good as any blue cheese dressing you’d normally have with buff chicken.5 stars

  82. Had to stop mid-plate to rate this, that’s how amazing it is!! I’m not a fan of green onions so we used diced celery to garnish, which added the perfect layer of crunch! Definitely adding this one to our regular rotation- thank you, Erin!5 stars

  83. This recipe is easy to do and SOOOO delicious! We found it last week and have already made it twice. I would definitely recommend it!5 stars

  84. Could you tell me how many calories the chicken has without the Greek yogurt and how big a serving a chicken is

    1. Hi Bethanye! Unfortunately, I only have the nutrition information listed. However, you could use an online calculator (like MyFitnessPal) to find an estimate based on your exact ingredients. I hope this helps!

  85. This is one of our favorite meals but would love to cook it in instapot. How long should I set the pressure cooker timer to cook turn chicken?5 stars

    1. Hi Ashley, I’m so glad you enjoy the recipe! I have not made this in the Instant Pot, so I can’t offer specific experience, but reader Krista did try it and left her notes in a comment. She did 6 minutes on high pressure, 4 ounces of buffalo sauce, and 4 ounces water, and then thickened with cornstarch afterward. If you decide to experiment too, I’d love to know how it goes!

  86. amazing how delicious & easy they were! everyone LOVED them. the spice from the chicken mixed PERFECTLY with the sweetness of the sweet potato. I subbed feta for blue cheese in the dressing and it was amazing.5 stars

  87. This meal is so easy and so so delicious! My husband isn’t a blue cheese fan but said that the dressing topping the chicken was actual good! I love blue cheese so I was all about it already. Thank you!5 stars

  88. My husband and I have been LOVING this recipe for years. But I’d like to know if I can use flour in place of cornstarch? I’ve read cornstarch doesn’t freeze well, and I’d love to freeze any leftovers we may have. Thanks!5 stars

    1. Hi Amy! Thank you for this kind review! You can freeze the chicken up to 2 months. I haven’t tried it with flour, but you can make a slurry with flour so it should work. The cornstarch helps thicken the sauce, so you definitely need something there to help thicken it. Hope this helps!

  89. This recipe is a huge hit in our house! It really hits the spot. And so easy to prep with the crockpot. 10/10 recommend.5 stars

  90. My mom made this for our family vacation this past weekend. I LOVED IT! I can’t wait to make it for my own family. I am wondering…is there a way to transpose this recipe from the crock pot to the instant pot?!

    Thanks so much!5 stars

    1. Hi Sarah! So glad you enjoyed the recipe! Thank you for this kind review! I haven’t tried it in the Instant Pot, but others have put their adaptions in the comments. If you give it a try, let me know how it turns out!

  91. Hi,

I’m doing Whole 30 and I’m curious what others have done to replace the cornstarch in this recipe? Do you happen to know what would be a good replacement?

    1. Hi Brooke, if you omit the cornstarch, the sauce will not be as thick. Is arrowroot starch whole 30 approved? If yes, that’s a great substitute! Hope this helps!

  92. Very good recipe and will definitely make again! I cooked the sweet potatoes in the slow cooker alongside the chicken. Saves extra steps and a pan. Just wrap each potato in foil, then stack them in one half of the cooker and the chicken on the other half. Mixed all the seasonings, coconut oil and half the Buffalo sauce and pour over just the chicken (it will spread a little but not much since only half the sauce and the foil keeps it off the potatoes). I added the rest of the Buffalo sauce along with the corn starch slurry. The potatoes were done 30 min prior to the chicken, but I left them in with no problem – they just won’t hold a “boat” shape after you cut them (more like an open faced sandwich :) )5 stars

  93. So yummy!!! We will be making this regularly! Very easy to make and we added a little bit of cheese to it — Perfection!5 stars

    1. I’ve always detested blue cheese but we tried this recipe and honestly, this dressing was amazing! The dressing didn’t taste like funky blue cheese at all. Really enjoyed it.

  94. Great recipe! Delicious and made several good sized portions. Give the sweet potatoes plenty of time to cook, they take longer than you might think.5 stars

  95. Let me start by saying that my husband and I love this recipe. I’ve made it many times in my crock pot but today I was in a pinch and needed to make it in my instant pot. OMG Soo tasty, just like the original recipe but quicker. Here’s what I did. I turned the instant pot on saute to melt the coconut oil like she did in the microwave. I added the remaining ingredients and whisked to combine. Here is the trick…since the recipe calls for 3/4 cup liquid (hot sauce) I added a 1/4 chicken broth/hidden valley mix I had leftover from making ranch chicken for my kiddos. They can’t handle the heat so I made their ranch chicken in the IP before making ours. I then added the chicken and coated with the sauce using a spoon. Set the IP to manual for 10 minutes. I let it natural release for 10 minutes. Shredded the chicken while I set the IP to saute and added the slurry. I saute the sauce with the slurry for 5 minutes stirring often. Added the chicken back to the instant to coat in the sauce. And DELICIOUS 😋 thanks for this healthy tasty recipe!5 stars

    1. Hi Freckles614! So glad you enjoyed the recipe! Thank you for your feedback on cooking it in the instant pot, it’s so helpful for other readers! Thanks again!

  96. I’ve been making this for years and love it leftover! I’ve also made ranch dressing to drizzle on top and in a pinch I’ve added a little sour cream. Delicious and easy recipe!5 stars

  97. This is a staple in our house. I’ve been making it for years! My boyfriend is so picky, so I swap out regular potatoes for him. But we do this for meal prep, dinner, lunch, you name it, we eat it. Its delicious! I love loading it with scallions and a dash of cheddar on top, we do ranch instead of blue cheese.5 stars

  98. Alright, eating it right now. Used Kerrygold grassfed Irish butter instead of coconut oil, was too scared that it will come out weird ;) had some expensive bio farm raised chicken breasts, so I used those.
Also had to use Frank’s buffalo instead of original since I found out I run our of it. It’s OK I guess since Frank’s buffalo doest have any added fat in it, just butter flavoring. Cooked for 4h 15min on low.
For the topping I mixed some ranch dip mix with 6% greek yoghurt and chives, also chopped some leftover green chillies. Airfried the potato’s.

10/10 delicious. The cornstarch trick in the slowcooker works amazing. The chicken is so damn tender and delicious. While I don’t usually fall for all this “bio”, “natural” etc overpriced stuff, when it comes to chicken it makes absolutely night and day difference.

Thank you for the recipe, I will definitely make those over and over again.5 stars

  99. This was SUPER tasty and fulfilling. I’m not usually a fan of blue cheese but mixing it in the yogurt sauce was just the right amount of tang to balance the spicy chicken and sweet potato. I loved this combination. Thank you!5 stars

  100. I made these a couple times, once when my brother came over for dinner and we both loved it! Super easy and flavorful! I go a bit lighter on the cayenne because I don’t do great with super spicy but overall I loved it! Great on dinner rotation!

I was wondering if you have any easy ranch dressing recipes though? I like to switch between the two dressings since I eat them four lights in a row for myself :)5 stars

    1. Hi Kathy! So glad you enjoyed it! This is my version of ranch dressing that I have: https://www.wellplated.com/greek-yogurt-ranch-dip/ Hope you enjoy it!

  101. This recipe was AMAZING. Thank you so much for sharing! As a picky eater, it is hard to find healthy recipes I like. This turned out so good. I don’t like blue cheese, so I used feta instead. Can’t wait to make this again!5 stars

  102. I followed the recipe exactly and I loved it. Delicious recipe that anyone could do. I made this for dinner but it would be perfect for meal pep.5 stars

  103. How much sodium is in this recipe? Franks hot sauce has 190 mg per teaspoon. there are 48 teaspoons in a cup. How can that be healthy for you?

    1. Hi Skip! I stopped including sodium info because it can vary so much depending upon what products you used, and I found a lot of conflicting info online, so ultimately I didn’t feel comfortable publishing it because sometimes it wasn’t even in the ballpark. If you’d like to calculate it yourself, there are lots of free tools online (myfitnesspal.com is popular). I hope that helps!

  104. My new favorite recipe! This was absolutely delicious! I served with a side of broccoli. A healthy, but delicious dinner! Thank you!5 stars

  105. This turned out great!! I used thighs rather than breasts because I like how they turn out in a crockpot. Perfect!5 stars

  106. This recipe sounds delicious, but it is hardly healthy. Did you know than Frank’s Hot Sauce has 190 mg of sodium in one tsp? That would equal 1,701 mg of sodium PER SERVING! I noticed you left the sodium off your nutrition list. Do you have any suggestions for another kind hot sauce that would make this a healthy meal?

    1. Hi!

  107. Oh my gosh we absolutely loved this!!!! We didn’t do the sweet potato part because we ended up eating all the chicken in one day but we loved eating it with chips and as a taco!!!5 stars

  108. Loved it but next time I make it-I will use less cayenne. It was 🔥🔥🔥. Had my husband’s forehead sweating. Will make again for sure.5 stars

  109. Am going on try this it does look and sounds delicious, you mention cornstarch? I’m paleo and that isn’t part of the diet I will use tapioca or arrow root as replacements . Not sure if I understood wrong as the caption says paleo friendly

  110. I made this for the second time and let me tell you it is soooooo good! People are very interested about this one, when I post it on my Facebook story. I tell them “I know it sounds kinda weird, but the flavors together are AMAZING.” It is sweet, spicy and cool all at the same time!
We make a lot of your recipes because they are amazing and we are really into healthy eating. I just feel your recipes are exactly how I like to eat. I can’t recommend you to my friends and family enough!5 stars

  111. So excited to try – making tonight! But I don’t have cornstarch.. anything I could use to thicken instead? Thnx!!5 stars

  112. I am in LOVE with this recipe and it has been thrown into my rotation regularly. I’ve been working on eating healthier, but still love my comfort foods, so this is a great recipe for me. I typically make the chicken in my slow cooker exactly as specified and serve it for dinner that night with sweet potatoes per the recipe. I use a combination of Frank’s wing sauce & Sweet Baby Ray’s buffalo wing sauce. Since it’s just me and my hubby, I do one sweet potato for each of us and there is always plenty of leftover chicken. I really like eating the leftover chicken on it’s own with some pita crackers for lunch (sometimes add some celery & onion to it…buffalo chicken salad, yum!), and I’ve also whipped up buffalo chicken dip quick and easy for football Sundays with the leftover chicken. Super easy and delicious recipe, and love how versatile it is. I usually skip the bleu cheese dressing (not a fan of bleu cheese) and just add some feta cheese and green onions on top. Awesome and husband approved too :)5 stars

  113. So delicious & filling!! I was looking for lower calorie/ high protein meals and this hits the spot. So yummy!!5 stars
