This good-for-you Greek Yogurt Ranch Dip is thick, creamy, and longs to be smeared on your sandwich or dunked into with chips and veggies.

No Guilt Ranch Dip

Say buh-bye fatty ranch dressing that negates every salad it touches.

Hello to this protein-packed skinny ranch dip!

As I shared back when I posted this Roasted Red Pepper Parmesan Dip, nothing makes me more skeptical than a dip that advertises itself as “skinny.”

Most of the time, I’d rather have less of the real-deal than more of a low-fat dip that doesn’t satisfy.

Fortunately for us, a thick, dreamy base of plain Greek yogurt is the ideal stealthy healthy vehicle for the addictive garlic, onion, and dill spices that create classic ranch flavor.

Ben, who ingests vegetables with the attitude most humans apply towards cough syrup—a necessary evil—ate a good chunk of this Greek yogurt dip with carrots before I had even started the photographs!

“Delicious! Even my 12 year old daughter who doesn’t like ranch dip or even Greek yogurt, thinks it is tasty!”

How to Make Greek Yogurt Ranch Dip

All you need for this ranch-style Greek yogurt dip is a cup of your favorite non-fat plain Greek yogurt and a handful of dried herbs and spices that you likely keep stocked in your pantry.

The Ingredients

  • Greek Yogurt. Packed with protein, one of my favorite ways to use non-fat plain Greek yogurt is to turn it into a healthy Greek yogurt dip or sauce. It’s the best “skinny” swap for sour cream which is commonly used in other dip recipes.

Substitution Tip!

If you don’t have non-fat Greek yogurt on hand, readers have reported success making this recipe with traditional plain yogurt also. The consistency will be a bit thinner, but it will still taste great!

  • Garlic Powder and Onion Powder. Lends some zip and a little bite to the dip.
  • Dill and Chives. Brings color, freshness and that signature ranch flavor.
  • Worcestershire Sauce. Adds saltiness and craveable, savory umami flavor to the dip.
  • Cayenne Pepper. Just a pinch of this spice goes a long way in adding a touch of heat to this cooling dip.

Substitution Tip!

If you are really in a big hurry, you can of course always turn to a packet of Hidden Valley Ranch dip mix. Mix a few teaspoons into Greek yogurt and you are good to go.

(That said, I love this healthy homemade herb and spice blend though because it cuts down the sodium substantially from what is typically found in the Hidden Valley packets.)

  1. Yum! My husband won’t eat Worcestershire sauce. Any sub suggestions? Totally making this tonight – maybe I’ll sneak it in!

    1. Hi Sue, the flavor of the Worcestershire is super subtle, so you might get away with it :-) otherwise, I would just leave it out, and add just a teeny bit more kosher salt. I hope you guys enjoy it, and I would love to hear what you think!

    2. I tried this substituting soy sauce for Worcestershire sauce because I didn’t have any Worcestershire. It still came out tasting like ranch dressing, so I counted it as a success.

    3. We subbed in a combo of equal part coconut aminos (soy sauce would work too) + a dash of apple cider vinegar. Tastes just like ranch!5 stars

  2. just whipped this up and it’s delicious! im lactose intolerant so i subbed the yogurt for silken tofu, but it still has great flavor! …better than any ranch ive ever had out of a bottle!5 stars

    1. Jessica, this is officially the record for the fastest anyone has made something I posted! I am so, so excited that you enjoyed it, and I love the idea of using tofu too.

  3. i made it with fresh dill and added a squeeze of lemon juice and pepper. it was really good, will def keep making this. also I accidently made it with regular plain yoghurt and it was still good, just not as thick.5 stars

    1. Nancy, I’m so glad you enjoyed the recipe! It’s wonderful to know that it works with regular yogurt too. Thanks for letting me know how it turned out for you :)

      1. I made this too with regular yogurt–it was a bit runnier, which made it easier to use as a salad dressing! delicious :)

  4. Do you think this would hold up if I froze it? I live alone so i’m just cooking for myself. I would have to practically eat this every meal to use it all within three days.

    1. Hi Kevin! I’m sorry, but I honestly don’t recommend freezing this. I think the layers would get really mushy. If you’d like a smaller batch, however, the recipe is very flexible. You can cut it down by however much you like and layer it in a smaller pan. I hope you love it!

    1. Hoooooray Doreen! I am so thrilled to hear that. Thanks for trying the recipe and taking time to leave this lovely review.

  5. I made this to have on hand for veggies and was pleasantly surprised. Most greek yogurt dips have a tangy aftertaste that is a bit too strong for me, but this one did not. It tasted a lot like the “dill dip” recipe that has been in my Mom’s recipe file for decades (and calls for Accent seasoning- aka MSG). I did detect the slightest Greek yogurt flavor, but it wasn’t strong. I am curious as to whether I can get my husband to try it (he typically won’t go near anything with yogurt and is suspicious of any item that looks like it may have it).

Next time I would leave out the cayenne, as it did have a little bit of a kick to it that I don’t think was needed. I used a container of Fage which was 7 oz, so not quite a full cup.5 stars

    1. Angela, thank you so much for taking the time to leave this detailed review! I’m glad the dip was a hit, and I hope your husband enjoys it too if he gives it a try!

    1. Thanks so much for taking the time to review the dip, Melinda! I’m so glad to hear you enjoyed it!

  6. Well I’ve made it had to shift the measurements as being in England I don’t really work with cups but I managed it and it tastes great popped it in the fridge to take to work with me tomorrow for my carrots :D no doubt the flavours will only get better over night can’t wait. I’ve needed something else to have as a snack on my dumb diet haha and I think this is perfect!5 stars

    1. Gemma, I am so happy you enjoyed the dip! Thanks so much for taking time to leave this lovely review too. It means a lot!

    1. Great question! Regarding nutritional info, this is something that I’ve actually started adding to all of my new recipes, effective January 2016 (you’ll see it in the recipe box at the bottom). Unfortunately, it’s pretty time consuming, so I’m unable to go back and add it to past recipes. If you’d like the nutritional info for any of my older recipes (or really any other recipe or food), you can actually calculate it yourself for free at myfitnesspal.com (this is how I calculate the new recipes on my blog). I’m sorry I can’t give you the information for this exact recipe, but I hope that My Fitness Pal will be a helpful resource for you.

  7. Ok…I only have vanilla yogurt in my fridge. If I use it will it taste terrible? Should I just make the trip to the store for the plain yogurt?

    1. Carrie, I cannot recommend this swap. The vanilla flavor and sweetness won’t work well with these savory flavors. Sorry, but I think this will be worth the trip to the store!

  8. Very simple and delicious! I  always have Greek yogurt in the fridge, and I had all the spices needed for the recipe, so this will be my go-to veggie dip from now on!

  9. Wowwwwww this is absolutely amazing! Thank you thank you for giving me the opportunity to have such a healthy dip to have with veggies. SO EASY to make and so YUMMY. 5 stars

  10. Thank you!

I’ve been searching for a good ranch dressing recipe and my search is over!

With other recipes,  the sour tang of the yogurt always shone through but this one is perfect :)

I did substitute chili powder for the cayenne.5 stars

  11. It was pretty great! I still like my hidden valley ranch better but I’m trying to eat healthier so this was a great swap. Thank you for sharing!5 stars

  12. This was a fabulous surprise!! As others have said, it is better than any commercial Ranch. Serving it at a football party and I know it will be a hit!!5 stars

  13. I will not likely buy yogurt based veggie dip ever again. This was quick, easy, tasty, healthy, inexpensive… Plus no special ingredients meant that I could make this without a trip to the store. Thanks for sharing.5 stars

  14. I know these ingredients make one cup. But if I was just going to dip some veggies how many servings would this make?

    1. Hi Nicole! I find this serves 4 to 6 if you have it as a part of a spread with a few other items. I hope this is helpful!

  15. This tastes a lot like onion dip to me, very very good as a veggie tray dip. I made it for my daughter to dip broccoli tots in as she is allergic to egg and can’t have typical ranch. Definitely recommend this as a dip for whatever!!5 stars

  16. Perfect! I made a new recipe that was missing a little something and needed a dip or a sauce. I searched for “yogurt dip” and 2 minutes later dinner was complete! I added a touch of red vinegar and a pinch of sugar too.5 stars

  17. Ok this is SO much healthier than the Kraft brand and if you leave it in the fridge for at least a few hours it is DELICIOUS. On weight watchers and the entire cup of this is the same amount of points as 2 tbsp of Kraft! Hallelujah!
    Great recipe! Thank you!5 stars

    1. Hi Jane, while I have not tried it myself with regular plain yogurt, other readers have with success! Let me know if you try it!

  18. I love how easy this is, and uses ingredients I always have on hand. Best of all, it’s got a great flavor that works well with veggies. A winner!5 stars

  19. It’s so simple, yet such a great recipe! I’m cutting calories and eating tons of fresh veggies, and this has been ESSENTIAL to my healthy eating habits. Well Plated is my go to site for unique, healthy, flavorful recipes!5 stars

  20. This has been my go-to ranch dressing for a couple years now and I love it! I usually add lemon juice to thin it out a bit, but this healthy swap is a keeper.5 stars

  21. Erin, I am a senior citizen who has never left a comment on a website before, but I felt compelled to do so. I have used many of your recipes, and they are ALL excellent. I’m especially excited about this dip recipe now that I have to be on a low sodium, high protein diet. This recipe is exactly what I was looking for. Keep up the good work – you are an excellent and health conscious cook!5 stars

  22. Haven’t tried recipes. Wondering why the sodium is missing in the nutrition analysis. RD at dialysis clinic; sodium is always an issue. Thanks

    1. Hi Kim! I stopped including sodium info because it can vary so much depending upon what products you used, and I found a lot of conflicting info online, so ultimately I didn’t feel comfortable publishing it because sometimes it wasn’t even in the ballpark. If you’d like to calculate it yourself, there are lots of free tools online (myfitnesspal.com is popular). I hope that helps!

    1. Hi Bianca! I’ve not used fresh dill in this, but did a quick Google search. It seems 1 tablespoon fresh dill = 1 tsp dried dill. So since this recipe calls for 1/2 tsp dried dill then it would be 1/2 tablespoon fresh dill. If you decide to experiment, let me know how it goes!

  23. Omg. It tastes too good to be skinny😍
There is nothing better in the summer than tomatoes fresh from the garden. So I diced my tomatoes and dunked them in this delicious dip. Thinking about substituting this for mayo! Thank you!5 stars

  24. Do you have a veg friendly substitute for Worcestershire sauce? Brags amino? Vinegar? What do you think would come close for this recipe?

    1. Hi Cara, Google says soy sauce might be a good substitute. I’ve only tested it as is, so if you decide to experiment, let me know how it goes!

  25. I made this receipe in August for a.veggue tray. I had left overs about 1/3 ccip and for future reference, l frozed it. Here it is November and l took it out and thawed it by sitting the container in faucet hot water and letting it slowly thaw. It was wonderful on my chicken leg. ( l was sorry l didn’t have more)5 stars

    1. Hi Justin, I’m so confused because I see it on my end. It’s in the recipe card, right above where you commented. There is even a “jump to recipe” button at the top of the screen to help take you straight there. Could you please check again?

  26. Ranch isn’t a thing in Scotland but I love veggies and Dip or crisps and Dip, finding a healthy one that doesn’t taste weird is rare! But this Dip is incredible!

Much loved by all the family, I did add a touch more garlic granules cause garlic is life in this household 😋

Made a Cup amount last night and its already gone! Cannot wait to make more and try more of your recipes!5 stars

  27. Question, I’m going to make this today but wondering why you recommend only keeping it refrigerated for 3 days? Is it because of the chives?

    1. Hi Tracy! It’s just based on all of the other ingredients mixed into the Greek yogurt that I found 3 days to the optimal storage for it!

  28. Taste test was excellent, hopefully the crowd likes it tomorrow! I forgot dip for a veggie tray at the grocery store today, so I found your recipe for inspiration and used what I had on hand. I had about 2/3 c yogurt, so I added some cream cheese and a dollop of mayo to make up the volume and replaced the dill and salt with ~2/3 tsp celery salt. Thanks for sharing!5 stars

  29. Tastes great, but when I think of veggie dip I don’t think of spice, even if it’s just a hint. I’d use half the amount of cayenne pepper if I were to make this again, and add a bit of black pepper & fresh garlic. Other than that this is perfect. I did have to add a bit more salt, & I used fresh dill, but that’s just my taste preference. pretty good for such a healthy dip, will definitely make it again.5 stars

  30. This is great! Just made my first batch and will tell you now that it won’t be my last! I am forcing myself to enjoy yogurt and have decided that Greek yogurt is my own, personal, viable option. This fits the bill perfectly and will be a regular in my new weekly schedule.5 stars

  31. Overall the recipe was good, but I felt it was missing something. I added a half teaspoon of white vinegar and that seemed to do the trick.4 stars

    1. Hi Brian! So glad you enjoyed the recipe! Thank you for this kind review and feedback!

  32. Taste great as a dip but wondering if you have a trick to turn this into a salad dressing – a little looser.5 stars

    1. Haven’t tried this one yet, but based on other recipes I’ve seen (I’m also looking for a thinner, salad-dressing type), about 2 Tbsp milk should work. (that was with 2/3c yogurt so might need a tiny bit more for this one)

  33. I just made this for a party and all I can say is… I should have tested it before serving it. Unfortunately, everyone at the party found it inedible and it completely went to waste. Just tasted like bad yogurt (my yogurt was in date) no matter how many spices I added.1 star

    1. I’m sorry to hear the recipe wasn’t to your taste, Abi. I know it’s disappointing to try a new recipe and not enjoy it. I (and many other readers) have enjoyed it, so I really wish they would’ve been a hit for you too!

  34. I don’t see anything that says how many mg’s of sodium in the recipe, am I missing something? thank you for any help4 stars

    1. Hi Rhonda, I stopped including sodium info because it can vary so much depending upon what products you used, and I found a lot of conflicting info online, so ultimately I didn’t feel comfortable publishing it because sometimes it wasn’t even in the ballpark. If you’d like to calculate it yourself, there are lots of free tools online (myfitnesspal.com is popular). I hope that helps!

    1. Hi Martha, The nutritional information is not always completely accurate and can vary depending on ingredients and brands of ingredients used. When in doubt I would double check with a free source like myfitnesspal.com. Hope this helps!

  35. Wow! I have leftover veggies from Thanksgiving and have been looking for a healthier veggie dip. This is delicious!! I substituted soy sauce for the Worcestershire sauce as I don’t have any right now and it worked great! Wonderful recipe!5 stars

  36. I made this after searching for a ranch dip I could eat without fear of all the unhealthy stuff found in the store-bought versions. This recipe is perfect. I used organic Worcestershire sauce. Since I had no cayenne, I substituted smoked paprika. It’s delicious. I go through so much of it a week I have to keep the yogurt on hand whenever I want something to dip my baby carrots in.

I also use dried chives and found the flavor of this dip does not differ from the ones in the store. I’m glad I can have my ranch dip again. Thank you!5 stars

    1. I’m sorry to hear the recipe wasn’t to your taste, Trinka. I know it’s disappointing to try a new recipe and not enjoy it. I (and many other readers) have enjoyed it, so I really wish they would’ve been a hit for you too!

    1. I’m sorry to hear the recipe wasn’t to your taste, David. I know it’s disappointing to try a new recipe and not enjoy it. I (and many other readers) have enjoyed it, so I really wish they would’ve been a hit for you too!

  37. This so great! Super versatile too – I love the tangy flavor / notes of anise so I went a little heavier on the dill and omitted the spice. I’m sure it would be great with other dried herbs like parsley or oregano!5 stars

    1. Hi Shasta! For each recipe, I estimate to the best of my ability based on the information available in the calculators themselves. These numbers are meant to be a guide, not a statement of fact. Many elements can cause the dish I make at home to vary nutritionally from the iteration you create, including brands of ingredients, measuring styles, and final serving size. Further, the accuracy is limited by the information available in the My Fitness Pal and Wordpress Recipe Maker databases. So when in doubt, I would double check with a free calculator online. Hope this helps!

  38. This was great! I plan on pre-making the spices to add to yogurt and Worcestershire sauce so we can whip it up faster. Thank you so much for sharing!5 stars
